Julie Andrews Isn’t Returning to ‘The Princess Diaries 3,’ Insists She “Shouldn’t Be a Part of It” Multiple Times in Interview

Dame Julie Andrews isn't reprising her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi of Genovia in The Princess Diaries 3, which is currently in development with Anne Hathaway set to return as Mia Thermopolis.So why isn’t Julie Andrews returning? She told The Hollywood Reporter, “I think the absolute truth is that I think I’m really past all that now. I’m not completely retired, but it’s a different kind of work that I do these days—[writing] books, and I do a lot of recording of podcasts and voiceovers. But truly, I don’t think I should be a part of it.”She added that it's “still lovely to be working on things,” but not “necessarily on camera,” and doubled down with “It isn’t that I’m not enthusiastic for it. It moves on, but by now Annie too is a little older than she was when she did it. I’m interested to see what Meg [Cabot] and Annie and everybody comes up with.”Anne Hathaway announced the third movie back in June:But she confirmed production is paused while she focuses on her pregnancy, telling SiriusXM's Radio Andy, “I'm busy making baby number three, and that has sort of taken the place of knowing exactly when I can make Princess Diaries 3. But, I can say I think we had a story breakthrough. I think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on—we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.”
