I've tried on everything in the new M&S catwalk collection. These are the pieces you need to buy now before they sell out, including the jacket which looks like it's Stella McCartney but is a tenth of the price

But I also know that neither I, nor most mortals, could actually afford a single item on view.Last Friday was different. It was day two of London Fashion Week and there was a new name on the schedule. The Design Museum in Kensington had been transformed into a showspace under its swooping concrete roof and the front row was a mix of everyone who’s anyone, from Joan Collins and Kemi Badenoch to David Gandy and Ian Wright. Pixie Geldof and Anais Gallagher sat gossiping. Then the lights dimmed, the music started and the first model strutted out in a fabulous double-breasted blazer and matching wide-leg palazzo trousers. So far, so fashion week. The only incongruous thing was the price list: the most expensive thing was £450 and half were less than £50.For, showing in London alongside the likes of Burberry and Alexander McQueen was High Street favourite M&S – at prices we could afford. To celebrate 100 years of fashion at M&S, chief executive Stuart Machin said he wanted to ‘showcase our designs on fashion’s global stage’.M&S is growing its market share among young Brits, moving from fourth place to third with the under-35s. But it doesn’t alienate the over-40s, either. Loving something on a runway model – especially when she is Jodie Kidd – is very different from loving it in a High Street changing room. I had to try these pieces for myself and they more than held their own.For a few of them, M&S drew inspiration from its archives, including the black tuxedo jacket, £85. Frankly, it would give Stella McCartney a run for her money. It comes with matching trousers – worn as a pair, they’d be perfect for the upcoming party season. But I also love it with its barrel leg jeans, £46, for more casual drinks. The outerwear was second to none. The white coat with detachable fur cuffs, £98 and £20, was worn by Lara Stone and looked like something aimed at women with a different lifestyle to me. But I loved it on. It feels like a statement but it really can be worn every day, to any event.M&S is quick to pick up on luxury trends and the real leather tailored coat, £450, and matching pencil skirt, £250, in a rich chocolate brown, is a perfect illustration of that. With the cable-knit jumper, £65, this is seriously chic office attire.Equally versatile is the aviator jacket, £75, which comes with a detachable collar. I’m wearing it with its kilt, £48. M&S has also managed to make a twinset trendy using flecked wool. The oversized cardigan stops it from being twee. For more casual days, I love the flannel shirt, £48, and Chloé-esque shearling cropped jacket, £250.The bright sparks at Marks have nailed it!
