Sign in to your ScreenRant account Goku is known for his relentless desire to grow stronger and surpass his limits in Dragon Ball. He constantly trains and takes part in combat to grow as a fighter, and along his journey, this has allowed him to overcome seemingly impossible odds. Since the very beginning, this drive for improvement has been a defining aspect of his character. However, while it’s one of his most admirable qualities, it’s also one of his most limiting traits. In spite of everything Goku has accomplished across the Dragon Ball franchise, he’s remained rather stagnant as a character, and his obsession with growing stronger prevents him from being able to develop in more meaningful ways. Goku’s endless pursuit of self-improvement is both impressive and inspiring, but it’s also created a cycle that his character has become trapped in for decades, and it's hindering his true potential. Goku’s Endless Pursuit of Strength Is One of His Most Admirable Yet Problematic Qualities Regardless of how powerful Goku becomes or what challenges he overcomes, he never grows complacent, and his work ethic never wavers. He sees every milestone he crosses as an opportunity to improve, pushing him to refine his abilities and push past any previous limitations. This determination makes Goku an exceptionally inspiring example of perseverance and self-discipline. Beyond that, Goku’s ambition stands out as even more admirable due to his driving motivation behind it. Unlike those who pursue power to dominate others or prove their superiority, Goku finds fulfillment in the challenge of becoming stronger itself. Training for him isn’t solely a means of preparing for the next battle, but a genuine passion that gives him a sense of purpose. His mindset and authenticity have also influenced those around him throughout Dragon Ball. Former enemies often become friends, standing alongside Goku as one of Earth’s protectors, and many of them are inspired by Goku’s drive and pure-hearted optimism. All that said, Goku’s determination and journey to grow stronger are more complicated than simply training and taking on massive threats. Time and again, Goku’s pursuit of strength has overshadowed the needs and safety of those around him. Throughout the franchise, he has been responsible for some of the greatest dangers and challenges the Z Fighters have ever faced, and while his intentions are never malicious, he has proven his judgment is often clouded in battle, placing his friends and family in unnecessary danger. Goku’s Single-Minded Obsession With Getting Stronger Comes at a Cost Goku’s enthusiasm for challenging powerful opponents has been the driving force behind some of the series’ most high-stakes battles and tournaments. From choosing to spare Vegeta to not taking the opportunity to defeat Buu, Goku’s judgment repeatedly puts others at unnecessary risk. While some of his choices paid off in the long run, as it had in Vegeta’s case, not every choice is as easy to justify. Whether it’s choosing to give his enemies another chance because he wants to see how powerful they can become, giving his enemy a Senzu Bean to push someone else to unlock their potential, or choosing not to eliminate an opponent because he wants another hero to take the lead, Goku’s decisions throughout Dragon Ball Z have constantly gambled the lives of those closest to him. Then in Dragon Ball Super, his suggestion to organize a tournament with the strongest fighters across multiple universes ultimately leads to the Tournament of Power, one of the most dangerous tournaments in the franchise and with the highest stakes. While it was Grand Zeno who made the final decision, Goku failed to heed multiple warnings and faced the challenge with excitement, outwardly seeming as if he didn’t fully grasp what was on the line. Altogether, these incidents show that Goku plays a major role in creating dangerous situations where innocent lives hang in the balance. While his love of fighting and self-improvement is admirable, it’s also one of his greatest flaws due to how blinded he can become. However, this weakness also presents a unique opportunity for Goku’s character to further develop. Goku Needs To Grow Beyond His Obsession With Strength Goku’s repeated mistakes stem directly from his obsession with strength and competition, traits that haven’t evolved for decades. As a character, Goku is defined by his optimism, kindness, passion, and drive, but he has always been rather stagnant when it comes to overarching character development, especially in comparison to supporting characters like Vegeta or Piccolo. Now, over 40 years since the story first began, it’s time for Goku to officially grow beyond this obsession. As Dragon Ball continues to expand its story, Goku’s fixation on self-improvement and strength shouldn’t continue to be a single-minded priority that overshadows his character. In many discussions, Goku is often argued to have little to no depth precisely because of how overpowering this particular aspect of his character is. Now, over 40 years since the story first began, it’s time for Goku to officially grow beyond this obsession. Rather than continuing to be the character who prioritizes battle and pushing past his limits to the point of endangering those around him, Goku has the opportunity to embrace a more mature understanding of what it means to be a hero. This evolution doesn’t need to change core aspects of his character, either. Developing doesn’t need to erase who Goku is as a person. Instead, it can let him discover new and refreshing parts of his character while maintaining his enthusiasm, humor, drive, and even childishness. Goku’s Greatest Achievement Could Be the Next Generation of Heroes Goku has already spent his entire life pushing beyond his limits and achieving heights that no one thought possible. However, his greatest achievement could potentially come from helping others do the same. After decades of training under the greatest martial artists and powerful beings in the universe, Goku has a wealth of knowledge that he can pass down to the next generation of heroes. If he puts his experience toward that purpose, it would allow him to continue training and pushing past his own limits while giving him a greater purpose as well as long-overdue personal growth. By using all the lessons he has learned, including those from his own mistakes, he could offer meaningful guidance and powerful techniques to help the next generation push past their own limits. I am the answer to all living things that cry out for peace.” You’re a pure-hearted warrior who lives for the thrill of the fight. Every challenge is an opportunity, every enemy a potential friend, and every defeat just fuel to come back stronger. People are drawn to your infectious optimism and unbreakable spirit, even when your naivety drives them crazy. You’d give your last Senzu Bean to a stranger and charge headfirst into a battle you can’t win — not because you’re reckless, but because you genuinely believe that pushing past your limits is the only way to grow. Like Goku, your greatest power isn’t your ki — it’s your ability to inspire everyone around you to be better.Pure-Hearted Fearless Limitless Inspiring 👑 Vegeta “I do not fear this new challenge. Rather like a true warrior, I will rise to meet it.” You carry yourself with the pride of royalty and the ferocity of a born warrior. Second place is not in your vocabulary, and you’d rather break your body than your spirit. People might call you arrogant, but beneath that iron exterior lies someone who has learned to fight not just for themselves, but for the people they’ve quietly grown to love. Your journey is one of evolution — from cold-blooded conqueror to Earth’s fiercest protector — and every scar you carry is proof that pride and love can coexist. Like Vegeta, you don’t just want to be the strongest — you need to earn it on your own terms.Proud Relentless Fierce Evolving 🧘 Piccolo “Sometimes, we have to look beyond what we want and do what’s best.” You’re the one everyone depends on when things fall apart — the calm center in the middle of chaos. While others charge in recklessly or let their ego do the talking, you see the bigger picture and make the hard calls that need making. You didn’t choose to care about people, but somewhere along the way it happened, and now you’d sacrifice everything for those you’ve taken under your wing. Stoic on the surface, deeply loyal underneath, you’re the mentor, the strategist, and the last line of defense all in one. Like Piccolo, your true strength is wisdom — and the courage to do what’s right even when no one is watching.Wise Tactical Protective Stoic ↻ PLAY AGAIN Audiences have already seen glimpses of this potential through his training with Gohan and eventual mentorship of Uub. In these cases, Goku recognized potential and hidden power long before others and took it upon himself to encourage and bring out the best in them. If he were to make that instinct a more consistent priority alongside his own training, Goku could finally develop a greater sense of responsibility beyond his own ambitions and even allow the younger generation to fully establish their place in the franchise. If the series moves in this direction, it would let Goku evolve as a character without abandoning his love of fighting or his desire to keep growing stronger. For a character who has remained largely the same for decades, it’s long overdue for him to earn more meaningful personal development rather than solely influencing the world around him. If Goku breaks free from the cycle his character has been trapped in, he could easily become even more compelling and impactful than ever before.
