On Apple TV alone, viewers can choose between Severance, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Silo, Star City, For All Mankind, and the immersive real-time thriller Invasion. Meanwhile, Prime Video’s Foundation got even more ambitious than these titles, converting author Isaac Asimov’s infamously dry, dense novel series of the same name into a thrilling, twisty story that feels more like Game of Thrones than a dull academic text. Traditionally, hard sci-fi writers like Asimov have often proven tough to adapt, as their work can be steeped in theory, but short on character and plot. However, the renewal of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem proves TV writers have found a way to work around this issue. 3 Body Problem Combines The Scale Of Interstellar With Isaac Asimov Influences Based on the Chinese author Liu Cixin’s celebrated novel Remembrance of Earth's Past, the title of 3 Body Problem comes from a famous problem of Newtonian physics. Although the book technically focuses on humanity’s response to extraterrestrial contact, Remembrance of Earth's Past was hardly an accessible story of alien invasion like 1996’s blockbuster Independence Day. On the contrary, the source material for 3 Body Problem has more in common with Asimov’s work, moving between present-day settings, the distant past, the world of an in-universe virtual reality game, and the scientific experiments carried out by the Oxford Five, a multidisciplinary group of academics tasked with handling humanity’s contract with extraterrestrials. If this sounds challenging, that’s because it is. Remembrance of Earth's Past is a massively ambitious tome that makes Arrival and Interstellar look straightforward. The novel’s plot, if it could be called a plot, weaves in complicated, existential questions about parallel universes, real-life and theoretical physics, and dimensional travel with a storyline that spans all of human history, as well as incorporating an abstract alien society, too. It’s a big ask for any adaptation. However, like both Arrival and Interstellar, Netflix’s adaptation managed to not only bring this story to life, but to turn it into an accessible, thrilling sci-fi mystery that viewers couldn’t get enough of. This is superb news for anyone who understandably worried that the show’s mix of a high budget and potentially tricky, obscure source material could have spelled an early end for the series. Netflix infamously axed Mindhunter after only two seasons after telling the show’s creative team that they needed to either make the budget much smaller, or make the series much more accessible for a larger mainstream audience. The creators of that psychological thriller wisely opted to let the show end early, and Netflix’s commitment to completing 3 Body Problem seemingly proves the streaming service learned their lesson from this misstep.
