'I'm an American who has visited 71 Wetherspoons - here are my favourite locations, why I love the "extravagant" loos and the ONE menu item I order every time (even though I'm slightly sick of it!)'

Since visiting her first Wetherspoons with her now husband Andrew in 2024 - it was The Moon Under Water in Watford, in case you're wondering - Stacey Gitten has now visited 71 Wetherspoons up and down the country. It's a mission that has seen her travel as far as Edinburgh from their home in Southampton, and she 'even went to Wales just to go to a Wetherspoons', she tells me. But despite having visited 71 of the chain’s carpeted pubs - a mission that she has documented on TikTok under the handle @staceyintheUK (she moved from Chicago to be with her husband) - Stacey has tried surprisingly little of the menu. In fact, she has a go-to order; her control she uses to compare across the 'Spoons outlets. Stacey's go-to order is an eggs Benedict seen here on a classic patterned Wetherspoon's plate.‘In the morning I get Eggs Benedict every time, to the point where I’m probably quite sick of it.' As for the evening? She and her husband Andrew 'always either get a chicken tikka masala or pizza. I always get a cherry Pepsi max.’From trying her first chippy, to making beans on toast for the first time, when the former US resident Stacey first visited Wetherspoons it was a British cultural rite of passage. Now, she shares her ventures to Wetherspoons’ to a loyal fanbase online who will often recommend her next visit.‘I really want to do the Oxford one,' she says. Her favourite location (so far) has been the Tewksbury Garden in the Cotswolds. ‘It’s right on the river and the sunset out there was gorgeous.’ Stacey shares her Wetherspoons reviews with our thousands of followers on social media.As for a least favourite? Stacey is diplomatic but she does say that the location is Aldershot was 'forgettable'.She does, however, view the chain with classic American optimism. ‘Everyone says that they’re just dirty and run-down, but even the worst ones we’ve been in, the staff have always been wonderful,' she says. ‘I love every part of it and I think it’s been really important for romanticising my experience here. I know a lot of British people love their culture and I love it too.’Perhaps most controversially, Stacey is a big fan of the loos (or the washrooms as it goes to those over the pond).‘The bathrooms are such a shining star, some of them are so extravagant and beautiful. There’s one called the Isambard Kingdom Brunel in Portsmouth and it has the most stunning bathroom I’ve ever seen in my life.‘There are places we would have never gone if it weren’t for visiting a Spoons: Chichester was such a beautiful place, and Salisbury was great to spend the day. I don’t think we really would have gone there if not to visit the Spoons.’ Stacey and her husband Andrew in the pub garden of their favourite Wetherspoons in Tewksbury.There have, however, been some major adjustments for Stacey. ‘I don’t think we use the word serviettes, oh and cutlery just sounds so fancy to me,' she laughs.Speaking of cutlery, since posting about her pub travels those online and have had a few comments about her way of holding the knife and fork.‘I had no idea that I was using my cutlery like a barbarian and then I looked around in restaurants and people were holding their cutlery in the same way. In America, we don’t do that. We barely use knives!’Stacey's top ten Wetherspoons1. The Royal Hop Pole, Tewkesbury. This is Stacey's top pick for its beautiful garden right on the river.2. Old Underground Station, London. This pub still has ticket windows.3. The OId Manor, Bracknell. Great history, real old British vibe to it.4. The Samuel Peto, Folkestone. Located in a stunning, old Baptist Chapel.5. The Brightwater Inn, Shirley. Great service and a calm atmosphere.6. The Moon Under Water, Watford. The first Wetherspoons Stacey ever went to, for that reason it has a special place in her heart.7. The Bear, Melksham. Lots of space and off the beaten path near the busy city of Bath.9. The Kings’ Head Inn, Salisbury. A really beautiful two story Spoons with a garden on the river and great views from upstairs.10. The Rodboro Buildings, Guildford.
