I'll Admit I Was Skeptical, But Reacher's Neagley Spinoff Has Proved Me Wrong

Alan Ritchson's Prime Video action-adventure show is arguably the biggest breakout success of the genre since it debuted. Based on Lee Child's novels, creator Nick Santora and his team have done a great job balancing the adaptation of its source material while also having creative liberties to keep viewers engaged. While Reacher doesn't reinvent the formula, it has the basics down to perfection, making it such an enjoyable watch. Considering the popularity of Reacher, it made sense for Prime Video to capitalize on it by expanding its world. Santora teamed up with Nicholas Wooton for this endeavor, as they launched Neagley — the first-ever spinoff in the budding franchise. Spearheaded by Maria Sten's Frances, one of Jack's most reliable allies and another former member of the 110th Special Investigations Unit, the new series dropped its full first season simultaneously as Reacher season 4 ended its run. In the new show, Neagley follows its titular character in her PI job in Chicago when a personal tragedy leads her to a big criminal conspiracy. There Were Understandable Reservations About Neagley's Spinoff Credit: MovieStillsDB When news that Prime Video was developing Neagley first broke out, it was met with reservations at best and downright dismissal at worst. Although Sten had been an established player in the Reacher world, with Frances being the only character appearing in all seasons of the project up until then, aside from Ritchson's hero, the substantial changes from the flagship were concerning. For starters, Neagley is deviating from its parent series' anthology format, taking on a more serialized storytelling. Secondly, Ritchson, who is synonymous with Reacher at this point, is being replaced with a new titular character. Finally, and arguably the biggest factor is the fact that Neagley doesn't have Child's books as its narrative compass. Unlike Reacher, which adapts one novel per season, Santora and Wooton are the primary drivers of its story. Of course, it has to adhere to what was established about her when she was introduced in print and then what was subsequently revealed in Reacher, but other than those, Neagley has creative freedom to take its narrative in whatever direction. It sounded like a massive risk, considering its parent show's success. Luckily, it was one that Prime Video took. Neagley Is Just As Good As Reacher Despite all the skepticism, Neagley defies all odds and proves that expanding the universe with Sten's character is the right call. Deviating from the established formula of its parent series has proven to be a nifty way to justify its existence, as it offers viewers something different but still familiar from the universe. As it is, Jack is a more interesting character to watch simply because Frances is more averse to people and deadpan, but Prime Video is able to use that to its advantage when assembling the ensemble surrounding her. In the end, Neagley is as entertaining as Reacher. If it moves forward, it might even surpass the flagship. Admittedly, that might be a prediction that is too bold at this point. After all, Prime Video hasn't even confirmed Neagley season 2, so while its ending effectively sets up more stories for Frances and her new rag-tag team, there's no official guarantee yet that they are coming back. If it does, however, and it is able to maintain the same level of quality, its format makes it easier for people to invest. Aside from its lead character, Neagley manages to introduce three new players in the Reacher universe that have their own interesting arcs. They allow the show to diversify its stories, providing people more options when it comes to plots.
