8 New TV Shows to Watch This Weekend on Netflix, HBO Max, and Apple TV (September 18-20)

Slow Horses is back for a sixth season, making it one of the only contemporary TV shows that are committed to releasing a season per year. It’s proven to be a successful gamble, developing a devoted fanbase and a critical darling. Then there’s Neagley, the new series starring Alan Ritchson, and continued proof that he’s becoming one of the definitive action figures of the decade. 1 Slow Horses Available on Apple TV Genre: Spy thriller Episode count: 6 Cast: Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden, Kristin Scott Thomas Based on the Mick Herron spy novels, Slow Horses follows the agents of Slough House, the MI5 unit where disgraced and faulty agents are sent. Each season has them meeting new enemies; this time around, the team is on the run from someone who’s targeting and killing them off one by one. From our Polygon interview with head writer Gaby Chiappe: Since premiering on Apple TV in 2022, Slow Horses has been one of the most consistently excellent shows on streaming. The adaptation of Mick Herron’s Slough House spy novels never wastes a moment of its six-episode seasons, delivering tightly paced mysteries interspersed with biting humor at the expense of the show’s failed MI5 agents. Even more remarkably, Apple has released six seasons in just four years at a time when the gap between new seasons of hit shows can exceed presidential terms. So when Slow Horses creator Will Smith announced he’d be leaving after season 5, fans were understandably worried about what it would mean for the show. The series centers on Frances Neagley, an army vet, private investigator, and fan-favorite of Reacher, who finds herself looking into the death of her childhood friend, immersing herself in a complex conspiracy. Now, she steps out of his massive shadow as a suspicious death from her past pulls her into a lethal game of her own. 3 Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story Available on Netflix Genre: Horror Episode count: 8 Cast: Ella Beatty, Vicky Krieps, Charlie Hunnam The fourth season of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series draws inspiration from another notorious murder case. The show takes us back to the 1800s, following the true story of Lizzie Borden, a woman who was acquitted after reportedly partnering up with her maid to kill her parents with an axe. 4 City of Blood Image: Disney+ Available on Disney+ Genre: Horror Episode count: 8 Cast: Lea Drinda, Bea Hoffman, Soma Pysall City of Blood is a German series set in a post-apocalyptic Berlin, where the privileged live under a climate-controlled dome and the rest are left to survive on their own. The story follows two sisters reuniting and discovering that vampires are planning to take power and submit humans. 5 Stranger Things Tales from ‘85 Image: Netflix Available on Netflix Genre: Animation Episode count: 10 Cast: Brooklyn Davey Norstedt, Elisha Williams, Braxton Quinney Set between seasons 2 and 3 of the live-action Stranger Things, Tales from ‘85 follows Eleven and her friends in the winter in Hawkins, as they battle remnants from the Upside Down and team up with new allies. 6 Plastic Beauty Image: Netflix Available on Netflix Genre: Drama Episode count: 8 Cast: Mayu Matsuoka, Riisa Naka, Shotaro Mamiya Netflix's latest Japanese series is set in the world of plastic surgery, following rival surgeons with opposing views on physical transformations, with many of the episodes questioning why patients seek these procedures. 7 Outlander: Blood of My Blood Image: Starz Available on Starz Genre: Romance Episode count: 10 Cast: Jamie Roy, Harriet Slater, Hermione Corfield The spinoff to the romantic-historical hit Outlander follows the love story of its protagonists’ parents. Set in two different timelines, one in 18th-century Scotland and another in World War I, the series follows forbidden romances amid warring clans and the devastation wreaked by the war. 8 Youth Image: HBO Available on HBO Genre: Comedy Episode count: 8 Cast: Sharon Horgan, Rupert Friend, Sharlene Whyte HBO’s latest comedy drama premieres this weekend, following a 50-year old literary agent and divorcee (Horgan) as she tries to find love in London.
