To be fair, they absolutely have a place in large homes where a single router struggles to reach every corner. However, more often than not, people end up overspending on expensive mesh hardware when the real problem comes down to an imperfect setup. Before you go out and spend money on a mesh system, it's worth trying these easy fixes that can noticeably improve your Wi-Fi for free. Keep your router unobstructed and away from other devices Furniture and electronics can choke your signal Placing your router next to a dense object is practically a death sentence for your Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi signals are a type of high-frequency radio wave, and they radiate outward from your router in all directions. While they can pass through objects, the signal becomes weaker as it does. Thin and porous materials like drywall and wood let signals pass more easily than solid ones like concrete and metal, but that doesn't mean you can place your router inside a cupboard and expect good signal strength. If you block the signal right at the source, i.e., the router, it will have a hard time reaching your devices, especially when they're in another room. The higher-bandwidth 5GHz and 6GHz bands will especially struggle to penetrate objects, effectively leaving you with just the lower-bandwidth 2.4GHz signal for all your devices. Antennas don’t broadcast equally in all directions. Instead, the signal typically spreads in a donut-like shape. When an antenna is positioned straight up at a 90-degree angle, that signal extends outward horizontally, which is great for covering a single floor. But homes are three-dimensional, so vertical coverage matters too. Angling the antennas can redistribute the signal to provide a better balance between horizontal and vertical reach. In any case, it’s worth experimenting. Test your signal in the hardest-to-reach spots before and after adjusting to see what works best in your space. And like any computer, routers are prone to random issues when they run for long periods, which can usually be fixed with a reboot. At the very least, you're clearing the cache and memory and giving the router a chance to select a channel that none of your neighbors are using. Fortunately, even the cheap Wi-Fi routers often now support scheduled reboots. It’s usually buried somewhere in the advanced options, which you can access through your router’s app or by typing your router’s IP address (often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) into your browser and logging in. Once you find it, I recommend scheduling the reboot sometime in the dead of night, once a week—such as Tuesday at 4:30 am. If your router doesn't have the option, you can use a smart plug to create a schedule instead. If these fixes aren’t enough, then it’s time to consider mesh The right router setup can go a long way in improving your Wi-Fi signal. That said, some homes have unique layouts with multiple thick walls that create dead zones a single router can’t fully cover.
