Most people consider the average FPS as the gold standard for measuring gaming performance. While it's a useful metric, the frame time offers way more insight into how smooth your gaming experience really is. A high average FPS with inconsistent frame times will still render terribly unsatisfying gameplay. Many things can contribute to high frame times, but you shouldn't be quick to blame the GPU. Your CPU, RAM, cooling, BIOS settings, and even background Windows overhead can be at fault. Your GPU might be waiting for the rest of your PC to catch up, so before you start browsing GPU deals, spend some time diagnosing other culprits. If your GPU is consistently at near-100% utilization when you're experiencing high frame times, then it can be the problem. However, most gamers have a setup that involves a GPU waiting on the CPU to feed it information. If you see high CPU utilization along with GPU utilization in the 80s or lower 90s, then the CPU is causing poor frame times. You can test this by playing a particularly problematic section of a game that frequently leads to stuttering. Monitoring the CPU and GPU usage using HWiNFO during this section will tell you if the CPU is the bottleneck. Titles like Microsoft Flight Simulator, Cities: Skylines 2, and several open-world games stress the CPU more than the GPU, making it very likely that your CPU is the limiting component. XMP/EXPO might be disabled in the BIOS It's uncommon, but it happens After the CPU and GPU, your RAM is the most important hardware component in the gaming pipeline. You need the memory to support the CPU, so that it can perform to its fullest potential. If your BIOS settings are somehow unoptimized, your RAM might be running slower than it can, leaving crucial performance on the table. XMP/EXPO settings are hygiene factors on gaming PCs, but some gamers might still have them disabled without knowing. Without the right XMP/EXPO profile enabled, you're not using the RAM performance you paid for. The advertised frequency isn't enabled by default in the BIOS/UEFI, so you need to select it manually when setting up your PC. Monitoring the CPU usage of background processes during frame time spikes will tell you which process was at fault. You can fix it by disabling unnecessary startup programs in Task Manager and uninstalling software you don't use regularly. Reducing Windows bloat will tangibly improve your gaming performance. It might just be thermal throttling playing spoilsport Ensure you're not losing performance to overheating Your hardware might be pretty capable and still fail to tackle fluctuating frame times. Adequate cooling is often ignored by gamers, but it's the only thing that keeps your CPU or GPU from thermal throttling. The moment your hardware nears the throttling temperature, it starts to pull back, reducing performance. This can very well affect your frame times, contributing to terrible frame times. Modern CPUs are designed to run hot when thermal headroom is available, but that doesn't mean you can ignore your cooling setup. A performant CPU cooler, adequate case fans, and optimized fan curves are still necessary to extract the most out of your rig. Moreover, overheating isn't good for your PC's lifespan either, so it pays to keep your temps under control. Poor frame times can ruin an otherwise great experience Your PC might be churning out great FPS numbers in every modern title, but that's not enough. You also need consistent frame times to enjoy your games without getting frustrated by micro-stutters. While your GPU seems like the obvious culprit, the rest of your hardware and software is probably at fault. Explore these possibilities before blaming the GPU.
