Hugh Jackman's new thriller finally spearheads its way to home release. With an acclaimed filmography including The Prestige, The Greatest Showman, and Les Misérables, the Australian actor's most popular role is Wolverine/Logan in the X-Men franchise. He's portrayed the Marvel role for over two decades, during which he initially ended his stint with Logan before his return in Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor continues to venture into diverse projects and sought a similar dark tone in his new A24 thriller, The Death of Robin Hood. Jackman joins actors like Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner to portray the iconic outlaw Robin Hood, but his version couldn't be more different. While past adaptations veered towards adventurous or comedic direction, Jackman's gritty iteration showcases the aged archer haunted by his past crimes. Less than two months after its theatrical drop, A24 announced that The Death of Robin Hood is officially coming home digitally on July 28. The release includes renting or buying the movie on video-on-demand, and it can be pre-ordered now. Aidan Monaghan/A24 The interest in The Death of Robin Hood comes as the rarest adaptation to be certified as R-rated, whereas past major features were usually rated PG or PG-13. More importantly, the reception for the A24 thriller was generally positive, delivering a solid 66% on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, it set a record as the first Robin Hood movie in the 21st century to be certified "fresh" since Crowe and Taron Egerton's versions were panned by critics, with 43% and 15%, respectively. The only other adaptation to draw strong ratings was the MGM+ series Robin Hood, which has a 77%. The Death of Robin Hood reviews highlighted the character study of the iconic outlaw burdened with guilt and regret. The dark aesthetic complements the gloomy, yet stunning production value, while Jackman's intense, weary performance and brutal violence add to the story's emotional depth. In fact, many critics compare his Robin Hood performance to Logan, who also endured a bleakness in the 2017 Marvel movie. The audience reaction was also lukewarm, with a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes. Nevertheless, the quick digital release is opportune because The Death of Robin Hood will now reach a wider audience and follow up with Jackman's other 2026 movie, The Sheep Detectives. The star's whodunit comedy, which is based on a 2005 novel, also faced financial disappointments, grossing just $131 million against a $75 million budget. However, the movie gained momentum after its digital and streaming release due to strong word-of-mouth and a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. This rediscovery has made The Sheep Detectives a surprise sleeper hit, especially once it landed on Prime Video in June. The Death of Robin Hood may experience a similar pattern, with factors like Jackman's popularity and the name recognition of the iconic outlaw. Meanwhile, it's expected to arrive on HBO Max due to the A24 streaming deal, but the adaptation doesn't have an exact release date yet. While the Oscar-nominated actor doesn't have any movies currently scheduled, Jackman and Ridley Scott will team up for an adaptation of the classic pirate story, Treasure Island. Based on the 17th-century ballad Robin Hood's Death, the A24 thriller was directed and written by Michael Sarnoski. The Death of Robin Hood cast also featured Jodie Comer, Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett, and Noah Jupe.
