Follow our man in and back any of his selections simply by clicking their odds. MR HOLLYWOOD (3.35 York, nap) Can give Willie Mullins his third Ebor win in four years. The six-year-old brings a mix of Flat and jumps form. He was an excellent third in the Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot before winning over hurdles at Galway and stamina won’t be an issue. He handles any ground and a strong gallop should play to his strengths. BY THE BOOK (2.40 Chester, nb) Will relish returning to this testing trip. This lightly raced five-year-old has already shown smart form at this trip. He returned from three months off with a good second to Al Aasy in Listed company at Beverley last time and was staying on at the end of 1m4f. Charlie Appleby’s gelding stays and has form on good to soft, so conditions hold no concerns. GERYON (1.50 York, treble) Can make the most of the drop back in trip after producing a career-best at Glorious Goodwood. Ger Lyons’ progressive three-year-old landed the Meld Stakes over 9f at Leopardstown before stepping up to 1½m for the Gordon Stakes. Despite carrying a penalty and meeting trouble, he finished a cracking second and pulled well clear of the rest. Returning to this trip looks ideal and he handles any ground. Persica is a serious danger after returning to winning ways in a Listed contest at Newbury. He had previously gone agonisingly close in the Diomed Stakes at Epsom on good to soft and brings rock-solid form. Damysus has yet to build on his impressive Earl of Sefton success but was third to Item last time which looks better now. First-time cheekpieces could sharpen him up. Archivist earned this rise in class with an impressive Golden Mile victory at Glorious Goodwood. He also likes it here but a strong pace may not play entirely to his strengths. Jonquil could be suited by how the race unfolds. He returned to form with a close third at Glorious Goodwood and his hold-up style should work well off what should be a brisk pace. Hankelow is also interesting back down in distance after failing to stay the French Derby trip, having finished third in the French 2,000 Guineas. 2.25 BAY OF STARS can turn a luckless Ulster Derby run into Melrose glory. Dermot Weld’s colt looked one to keep firmly on side at Down Royal where he repeatedly struggled for room before staying on strongly to finish third with plenty left in the tank. That came over 1m5f on soft and this slightly longer trip should be ideal. He had shown promise when scoring at Dundalk before finishing a close second on his handicap debut at Leopardstown. Infraad heads the dangers after landing a strong 1m4f handicap at Glorious Goodwood. William Haggas’s colt had been unlucky himself at Chester and shapes as though this extra distance will suit. Limestone brings serious class after winning the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot. He found the Grand Prix de Paris too sharp over 1m4f and this return to a proper stamina test is much more his bag. Vantage Code produced the most striking recent performance, absolutely bolting up by 12 lengths at the Galway Festival. He is much higher in the weights but a searching test clearly suits. Sharkeyboy is another Irish challenger to respect after going desperately close in a big-field Galway handicap on good to soft while Devil’s Peak caught the eye when flying home for second at Glorious Goodwood. Mythical Bay is chasing a hat-trick and already proven over 1m6f while course winner My Ballyquinn should appreciate a strongly-run race after finding a tactical contest against him at Sandown. 3.00 ZAVATERI can topple the older stars in a red-hot City of York Stakes. Eve Johnson Houghton’s colt established himself among last season’s leading juveniles when beating Gstaad in the National Stakes and his two runs this year suggest he has trained on. He chased home a smart rival in the Greenham before a setback kept him out until the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. Thrown straight into Group 1 company, he travelled strongly and finished a highly encouraging fifth despite meeting some trouble. Dropping back from a mile to a strongly-run 7f should suit and he has already won at the trip on good to soft. The weight allowance helps too. Japanese raider Satono Reve is a major danger. He was touched off in the QEII Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot before finishing third in the July Cup and his prominent style could be well suited to this track. He’s won over a mile so should stay. Notable Speech bounced back to his brilliant best in the Lockinge before disappointing again at Royal Ascot and this sharper test could suit. Lake Forest loves 7f and landed the Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood before enduring a luckless run in the Sussex just 24 hours later. He has a habit of missing the kick but a clean break would give him a huge say. Ten Bob Tony brings top-class form after winning the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot but a mile would suit better while Rogue Diplomat arrives on the upgrade after his Royal Hunt Cup win and narrow Lennox defeat. Daiquiri Bay is chasing a hat-trick after winning the Copper Horse at Royal Ascot and already boasts a Melrose third over this C&D. Last year’s Melrose winner Tarriance likes it here and advertised his wellbeing with a cracking fourth at Glorious Goodwood. Klassleader is another with strong York credentials. He impressed here on good to soft at the Dante meeting before finding firm ground against him in the Old Newton Cup. Emit and Paddy The Squire bring solid Royal Ascot form and are capable of hitting the frame while last year’s runner-up Ascending could revive over a more suitable stamina test. 4.10 EVENING SAIGON is the one to be with after his Stewards’ Cup success at Goodwood, where he showed plenty of determination to edge out Stratusnine. Still lightly raced for a four-year-old sprinter, he looks the type with more to offer. His earlier second at Goodwood and respectable Wokingham seventh underline the strength of his form, while a low draw looks another positive in a race where those high could have it tough. He goes on any ground and should be right there. Stratusnine is an obvious danger after another creditable effort here on Wednesday, while Sondad has enjoyed an excellent campaign and is proven under softer conditions. Dance In The Storm is particularly interesting dropping from 7f, having often raced freely and the strong gallop over this trip should suit. Air Force One arrives at the top of his game following Wednesday’s course success, while Toca Madera also ran well in that contest. Far Above Dream remains admirably consistent in races likes this so could reward each-way support. CHESTER 2.05 WHIP CRACKER is the pick in a competitive handicap, with his handy draw and proven ability at this venue making plenty of appeal. He was a solid second over 1m2f here when last seen in May, having earlier gone close in a 24-runner Newbury handicap over a mile. Dropping to this mile is fine and the likely strong pace will make this a test. Hector Crouch secure a good pitch from stall four and he’s proven on fast and slow ground. Asuka is probably the best horse in the field, having won three of his four starts. He overcame traffic to make a successful handicap debut at Thirsk last time and looks capable of better again but stall 12 is a serious complication around here. Rhoscolyn looks on a fair weight and has conditions to suit from stall 1, while Goldmoyne arrives in reliable form and is well berthed in three although his best has come on the all-weather. Collecting Coin impressed over C&D last time but must overcome stall 13. 2.40 BY THE BOOK will relish returning to this testing trip. However, he was well beaten in the Goodwood Cup last time and now drops back in trip. Lady Vivian chased Lazy Griff home at Sandown and likes it here, while Fantasy World won at this trip on good to soft when last seen on the Flat and is another with a shout.
