FRANKIE DETTORI has pulled out of his racing return – with the legendary jockey still recovering from his car crash. Iconic rider Frankie, 55, was set to contest next Friday Leger Legends race at Doncaster as part of the St Leger festival. But the stresses of race-riding are a completely different beast and Frankie admitted he is not well enough to get back on a horse just yet. He said: “I’m really sorry I won’t be riding in the Legends race. “I tried, I’m not fit enough. I still feel the effects of the car crash I had at the beginning of July. “But I will be there to support my fellow jockeys for the Injured Jockeys Fund. “I’ll also be there on the Saturday to support our oldest Classic, the St Leger. “I’d like to apologise that I can’t make the race this year and hopefully I’ll be there next year.” Frankie was rushed to hospital after flipping his borrowed Smart car when another vehicle hit him in Newmarket two months ago to the day. Most read in Horse Racing He was discharged from Addenbrooke’s Hospital a week later after suffering four broken ribs. Frankie, who officially retired at the start of this year following a global farewell tour, has always been determined to be well enough to return for the charity Legends race. But he ran out of time in his bid for fitness – instead hoping to be in a position to race in 2027. Speaking of his horror crash, wife Catherine said: “Someone once said ‘God laughs at people who make plans’. “Yesterday Frankie was talking about riding again, and then this happens. “I’ve never had to see someone sitting at the side of the road after a crash before. “It’s awful. You suddenly realise just how serious these things can be. “He got himself to the side of the road and there were so many lovely neighbours there almost straight away. People were so kind.” FREE BETS – GET THE BEST SIGN UP DEALS AND RACING OFFERS Commercial content notice: Taking one of the offers featured in this article may result in a payment to The Sun.
