Harvey Nichols' beauty advent calendar is the ultimate ‘treat yourself’ purchase

The mornings are getting noticeably darker, the knitwear has come out of hibernation, and festive ads are starting to sneak onto our screens. Halloween might be mere days away, but as per tradition, the retail world has completely bypassed autumn to kick off Christmas (zero complaints here – in my opinion, Christmas starts the second the clocks go back).Priced at £250, the Harvey Nichols 2026 Beauty Advent Calendar promises a whopping £1,000+ worth of beauty across 25 doors and 29 products. It sits right in that sweet spot where you are spending serious cash, but expecting an absolute treasure chest in return. The second this glorious mammoth of a calendar arrived on my doorstep, I dived in headfirst, tearing into all 25 doors early to see whether this hefty box delivers genuine indulgence or just expensive shelf-clutter (spoiler – it’s definitely not the latter). How I testedThe calendar boasts an Art Deco-style designMadelaine Dowds/The Standard Unboxing every single drawer across the 25 doors, I assessed the packaging, weighed up the balance of full-sized products against mini and travel samples, evaluated whether the shades and formulas suit everyday shoppers, and judged whether that £250 price tag feels like a genuine festive steal.Harvey Nichols beauty advent calendarHarvey Nichols ★★★★☆What we love: Immediate ‘bang for your buck’ with 25 proper doors, a massive, show-stopping keepsake box, an indulgent mix of viral wishlist favourites (Color Wow, La Mer), festive scent additions that rival dedicated perfume boxes, and a clever curation that balances daily staples with unexpected treats.Take note: Very skincare-heavy (with a couple of duplicates), noticeably smaller 5ml sample sizes behind certain doors, a few basic filler tools, and a couple of colour-specific items that won't flatter every skin tone.First impressions? This box is substantial. It is delightfully huge, remarkably heavy, and feels undeniably high-end before you even slide off the sleeve. Right off the bat, getting a full 25-door countdown immediately feels more generous and rewarding than the 12-day chests on the market at similar three-figure price points. What impressed me most about the calendar is how it nails a distinct three-tier balance. Firstly, you get the useful everyday staples you actively need (Davines conditioner, tweezers, a nail buffer, and heat protectants). Secondly, you get the big-ticket items you actively want, such as cult icon La Mer’s Moisturising Soft Cream and the Color Wow Dream Coat – a viral product I have wanted to try for months and completely fell in love with. Thirdly, and most fun, are the things you didn’t even know you wanted. Oribe’s hair thickening spray is something I never would have bought for myself, but having tried it, it might just earn a permanent spot on my shelf. The calendar packs in plenty of products I didn’t even know I wantedMadelaine Dowds/The Standard Even though Harvey Nichols sells a standalone fragrance calendar, I was thrilled to see scent hasn't been neglected here. You get two fragrances, and the first door’s Granado Esplendor Eau de Parfum (25ml) is delicious, warm, and timely. It smells like Christmastime in a bottle. The calendar is undeniably skincare-dominant. Opening days three, four, and five in a row deliver a pure skincare run. On the plus side, it supplies practically everything you need for a multi-step routine, including Caudalie’s famous Beauty Elixir – a cult staple I’ve heard lots about as an A-lister favourite of Victoria Beckham and Margot Robbie, but had never tried myself. On the downside, it borders on skincare overload in places. I don’t personally mind this, as I am always up for finding new bathroom cabinet favourites. However, skincare is deeply personal, and the idea of pausing your tried-and-tested staples to experiment with countless new formulas won’t appeal to everyone. When it comes to makeup, the edit is relatively sparse, but Harvey Nichols chooses quality over quantity. Versatile staples like Bob Beauté brow gel, Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk mascara, and an Isamaya ink liner mean most products will work regardless of age or routine. That said, not everything is entirely universal. Day 11 features a Rodial coral lip oil that simply won't be everyone's shade, reminding you that multi-brand calendars will always have an element of potluck. Is the Harvey Nichols beauty advent calendar worth it?My main gripe comes down to proportion. Some doors are exceptionally generous, tucking in two luxury treats at once. This makes the days with smaller samples feel slightly disappointing at first glance (Omorovicza Elixir, I’m looking at you)... until you realise the full-sized product carries a price tag well into triple digits, and suddenly you feel pretty grateful for even a droplet. Still, while 16 products are full-sized, a few inclusions feel closer to counter testers than luxury travel-sized treats. These minor points aside, this is the ultimate "treat yourself" purchase. It delivers the excitement of unwrapping genuine, top-tier luxury items every morning, balanced with practical restocks and delightful discoveries that will outlast the festive season well into 2027.
