Released in 2004, this follow-up to Vice City delivered on giving us a story we hadn't seen before in the GTA universe, incorporating tons of talented voice actors, and the likable protagonist Carl "CJ" Johnson. It was an instant hit, and if you still hear about it today, it's because the mainline GTA games stick with you in some way. Thanks to a new release, you can check out GTA: Infected State, and completely transform the way you interact with San Andreas. If you haven't dug out the game in a while, now might be the perfect time. GTA: Infected State is a complete and total conversion mod for GTA: San Andreas, and reimagines the world in a post-apocalyptic storyline with a "mysterious outbreak." You'll follow two FBI agents who are stuck in the mix, and will need to unravel the mystery and terrors of bloodthirsty zombies. The total conversion is no joke. Infected State adds a full inventory system, plus character progression and leveling mechanics. A first-person mode is included, as well as support for boss fights, a new physics system that's custom-built, in-game achievements, and original voice acting. There's a standalone "Free Survival" mode as well if you're just looking to hang out in a zombie-filled universe that isn't Red Dead Redemption-DLC-related. Here's a quick overview from the creators: "GTA: Infected State is a total conversion, story-driven mod that will completely redefine how you experience GTA, pushing its engine to the absolute limit. The story follows two FBI agents who, by a stroke of devastating misfortune, find themselves at the epicenter of a mysterious outbreak. As an unknown infection sweeps across the country, turning ordinary citizens into bloodthirsty monsters, you will plunge headfirst into their journey—where every choice you make shapes the final outcome." To play, download the game, unpack the folder, and launch it (the creators note not to unpack the archive into the GTA: San Andreas folder). Although it's playable today, Infected State is currently in development and may have "rough edges," according to the staff. Suggestions are welcome to help improve it over time, so if you're interested, you can help shape how it turns out.
