Actress Martha Plimpton, who played Stef Steinbrenner in “The Goonies,” exclusively declared to Page Six that “The Goonies 2” is “never gonna happen.” The 55-year-old explained, “I hear something, and then nothing. And then every single person wants to know, and I hear the same answer. It’s nothing.” Martha Plimpton (pictured on the far right, with Kerri Green, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Sean Astin, Ke Huy Quan and Jeff Cohen) told Page Six a “Goonies” sequel won’t happen. ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection Plimpton (pictured above Aug. 16) claimed that rumors of a sequel are “nothing.” Getty Images Plimpton, who was chatting with Page Six to promote Season 2 of FX’s “The Lowdown,” starred in “The Goonies” in 1985 when she was 14. Based on a story by Steven Spielberg, the classic adventure flick followed a group of kids on a treasure hunt, with Plimpton’s fellow cast members including Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman and Ke Huy Quan. During a 2020 virtual cast reunion hosted by Josh Gad, Spielberg explained that there have been “a lot of conversations” about a follow-up film. AFP via Getty Images “Every couple of years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold water,” the Oscar winner said. “The problem is the bar that [the movie] raised on this genre. “I don’t think we’ve really successfully been able to find an idea that is better than the Goonies that we all made in the ’80s,” the filmmaker continued. However, Variety reported in February 2025 that a sequel was in the works, with Spielberg producing. Steven Spielberg (pictured above on June 5) previously said a sequel idea arises “every couple of years.” Getty Images for Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment Ke Huy Quan (pictured above in February 2025with Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, Corey Feldman and Chris Columbus) has said he would “love” a sequel. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die. … There’s hope.” Per Deadline, writer Potsy Ponciroli told fans at the 2025 Venice Film Festival that he had turned in a “well-received” first draft and things were “moving in the right direction.” Deadline reported in 2025 that one was in the works, but there have been no further updates. ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection Writer Potsy Ponciroli announced that he’d completed a “well-received” first last year. In August 2025, Brolin shared his hopes with Entertainment Tonight that the project would happen “because the experience was so great.” He pointed out, “The movie is received so well, generation after generation. It’s just everything good about it.” Brolin gushed in August 2025 that the filming “experience was so great,” he has “trepidation” about a follow-up film. ©Warner Bros/Courtesy Everett Collection Brolin (pictured above on Oct. 10) joked that he and his co-stars will all be using walkers in the sequel. The “No Country For Old Men” actor went on to joke about a sequel coming out several decades after the first movie. “The Goonies grew up, and then they came out with their walkers and then they fell off a cliff because they couldn’t see very well,” he quipped.
