Magic Men male strip show in Swansea cancelled for being ‘too raunchy’

A male strip show has been banished from Swansea (Picture: Will Parfitt/Magic Men) Swansea Council has been branded a ‘spoil sport’ after cancelling a ticketed male strip show for being ‘too raunchy’. It comes after an unrelated incident where a semi-professional football club, in a sleepy Oxfordshire town, was forced to apologise for hosting a male stripper night which turned into a ‘Roman orgy’. The Magic Men Australia World Tour, similar to the likes of the West End show Magic Mike Live, was due to perform at the city’s Brangwyn Hall on October 30. As part of the experience, seven male dancers perform dance and strip routines, take their clothes off, and give members of the audience lap dances. Swansea was the penultimate stop on the UK-leg of the tour, and frontman William Parfitt took to Instagram to share his disappointment. ‘Too raunchy?’ he said. ‘Or is it not raunchy enough? This is definitely a first for Magic Men Australia. Sorry Swansea, they’ve pulled the pin on our show. In Wales, we will not be performing on Friday night… because apparently our show is too raunchy.’ He quickly offered fans the chance to come to the Croydon show tonight, and said they would be upgraded to VIPs and get to meet the cast. Many locals were quick to react to the council’s decision, suggesting that cancelling a male strip show was antiquated. ‘But we live in 2026 and not in 1926,’ wrote one local, Vanessa Levij. The council don’t have the right to babysit adults,’ added local Jayne Kelly. Unfortunately, Becky feels the cancellation of this show feeds into the wider push for censorship on women’s pleasure on social media, which she’s experienced first-hand while talking about her psychosexual work online. ‘It’s so dangerous these shows are being censored,’ psychosexual therapist Becky explains. ‘When there’s anything to do with female pleasure or sexuality, it gets shut down. Magic Men is predominantly for women’s enjoyment and pleasure, and I don’t see anyone cancelling strip clubs.’ In Cardiff, three strip clubs (Dusk Till Dawn, For Your Eyes Only and the Playhouse Gentlemen’s Club) have just won an appeal to renew their sexual entertainment venue licences, after labour councillor Sarah Merry, Cardiff’s deputy leader, claimed strip clubs contributed to a culture of misogyny towards women. Locals, too, felt that Magic Men Australia was no different to the Dreamboys, who are set to perform at the Swansea Grand Theatre in March next year. ‘Ridiculous! We were looking forward to that! Too raunchy? Well er yeah what did u think they were doing? A magic show?’ someone complained on Facebook. There’s clearly an appetite for this type of show. Magic Mike Live, which debuted at The Theatre at the Hippodrome Casino in November 2018, recently celebrated its 3,000th performance, performing to nearly 1,000,000 women in eight years. So, psychosexual therapist Becky believes this cancellation simply compounds a the negative narrative around female sexual enjoyment. ‘There’s so much sexual shame in society and this is another way for people to feel their sexual desire isn’t welcome or valid, that the shows are too much, and that should be a bad feeling instead of something that is praised,’ she says. A spokesperson for Swansea Council shared their statement with Metro, regarding the reasoning for the cancellation of the show, just a week prior to the event. ‘We’ve taken the decision not to go ahead with the Magic Men show at the Brangwyn Hall following concerns raised with us,’ they said. ‘We’re sorry for the disappointment this will cause.
