Launching exclusively on Switch 2 on November 5, we are now just days away from experiencing a remake of what many consider to be the greatest game ever made, and Google has kicked off the celebrations early with a rather unique Legend of Zelda easter egg. Take Google Back To 1998 Courtesy Of Ocarina Of Time If you enter Ocarina of Time on Google and hit enter, which I imagine many of you will be doing a lot this week, whether it be to watch all of the remake’s trailers one last time or check in on your pre-order, there should be a Master Sword in the bottom right of your screen. Click it, and your screen will be hit with the same blue and white effect that surrounds Link when he pulls the Master Sword in the original game, with a golden Triforce in the center. Once the effect fades, you’ll still be looking at the search results for Ocarina of Time; it’ll just look like you’re viewing them through a 1998 lens. That’s because the Zelda easter egg in question is a time-traveling one that, when used, makes your search results look the way that they did when the original Ocarina of Time was released in 1998. The Google logo has reverted to the way it appeared back then, complete with its long-forgotten exclamation mark, and the “Google Search” and “I’m Feeling Lucky” buttons are the big, grey chunky ones synonymous with ‘90s Windows that really felt like you were doing something when you clicked them. I've Seen Enough, I Want The Old Google Back The search results themselves are a lot more basic. Cleaner and less cluttered, and dare I say it, better. Maybe that’s the millennial in me who yearns for everything from my childhood to be brought back and forced on younger generations. That page of neatly arranged links and descriptions just looks more appealing to me than the modern-day alternative filled with images, ads, and an AI overview I didn’t ask for. While naturally all of the search results are about Ocarina of Time, they don’t appear to be curated for its time capsule page. The news about someone sharing footage early is on there, which is definitely not something Google and Nintendo would have wanted to include if the 1998 version of the page included predetermined search results. Unfortunately, you don’t seem to be able to keep Google’s 1998 de-makeover indefinitely. As soon as you search for something else and click on one of those chunky grey buttons, you’re returned to 2026 in the blink of an eye. You can also revert the page back to the way it’s supposed to be by clicking the Master Sword again, although if anyone from Google is reading this, I'd love a way for my Google to look like it never changed after 1998, and I bet I'm not the only one.
