CBS' Ghosts will finally be coming back from its summer hiatus this fall, but there's a catch surrounding the return of the network's supernatural hit. The American remake of the UK series, Ghosts follows Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay Arondekar (Utkarsh Ambudkar), a married couple who inherit Woodstone Manor only to find that it's inhabited by ghosts that Sam can communicate with after a near-death experience. The series, which began airing in 2021, has watched as spirits have moved in and out of the manor, with Sam and Jay attempting to help them to resolve things in the living world. Ghosts has become one of CBS' most popular shows over the course of its run, and though the series has been renewed for another season, its return is more complicated than it seems. Though Ghosts season 5 ended on a fairly massive cliffhanger, with Pete (Richie Moriarty) disappearing into thin air after not being able to get back to Woodstone Manor, the series' return may not fully address what's next for the spirits of the manor. Instead of coming back for Ghosts season 6, CBS has announced the show won't formally return to CBS until the mid-season in early 2027. Instead, Ghosts' return in 2026 is set to be an interesting in-between for the long-running show. The network has greenlit two specials for the sitcom, allowing it to jump into the regular fall lineup without premiering its next season ahead of schedule. Ghosts' holiday specials provide an entirely different return. Ghosts Season 6 Won't Fully Return On CBS Until Early 2027 One of the most polarizing tactics that network TV has employed over the past few years is the use of a mid-season release schedule. In the past, the mid-season was both for the return of fall shows that were in the back halves of their seasons, or for shows that were replacing others that had flopped in the fall schedule. With reduced episode orders and shows that are less tied to the September through May network schedule, however, networks have been using a mid-season schedule to bring more shows into the fold, with some premiering in fall, others in winter. Ghosts is the most recent show to be pushed to the mid-season, meaning that the next season won't premiere until early 2027. While this is a tough blow for fans of the series, Ghosts season 6 is still set to be part of the CBS schedule in the second half of the TV cycle. Although waiting for roughly eight months between seasons never feels like the best case scenario, Ghosts season 5 ending on a cliffhanger makes the fact that the next season isn't returning for a few more months tough to handle. Regardless, Ghosts will return before season 6. Ghosts is set to air two holiday specials in 2026, one for Halloween and one for Christmas. The Ghosts Halloween special, which will air on October 29, will pick up a few months after the show's fifth season, which will give viewers some resolution surrounding Pete's disappearance. Thankfully for fans of the series, they won't have to wait through the entire fall season to see more Ghosts. Ghosts Will Also Have A Christmas Special Released In December Ghosts coming back for two hour-long holiday specials is a great way for the series to return in a more limited fashion ahead of the 2027 mid-season. With the Halloween special airing in late October, Ghosts will also be returning for another holiday special in December, just weeks before the holidays. Airing on December 10, Ghosts' holiday special will be inspired by the movie Die Hard, which will surely evoke the spirit of the season. Although the series won't be returning for a full season in the timeline viewers expected, knowing that Ghosts will return in the fall is exciting.
