Games Inbox: Will Red Dead Redemption 3 be Rockstar’s next game?

Red Dead Redemption 2 – how long till the next one? (Rockstar Games) The Wednesday letters page makes a prediction about Rockstar’s next game, as a reader defends PlayStation Store pricing. Games Inbox is a collection of our readers’ letters, comments, and opinions. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.uk What’s nextI’m not going to say I’m not looking forward to GTA 6 – I’ve already pre-ordered it and booked the week off – but I am also very interested in what Rockstar does next. They’ve said a lot about how the next game won’t take another 13 years, but I assume they’re talking about all games and not just more GTA sequels. I would guess that whatever they do next won’t be another GTA, just because presumably another team would make it and it’s probably underway as we speak. There’s got to be a 50/50 chance that it’s Red Dead Redemption 3, but will that mean that these will be the only two franchises they ever make? If Rockstar thinks it can start making games quickly then hopefully that means they can afford to experiment with new franchises too. Or maybe old ideas, like Agent or that pirate game rumour that was going around a few years ago. Personally, I’d rather see them tackle a sci-fi game, which they’ve never really done, but… it’s probably going to be Red Dead Redemption 3, isn’t it?Pinky Deep rootsIt is funny how the campaign against cancelling Mass Effect already seems a lot bigger than the one against Sony going all-digital. As other readers have said, neither is going to work but I am impressed how quickly the Mass Effect fans have got organised and advertising at The Game Awards is actually a really good idea. Although I imagine that’s more expensive than the Times Square thing, that is purposefully meant to be cheap. Want GTA 6 news? Just to be devil’s advocate, I can kind of see EA’s logic in all this. A new Mass Effect would cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make and BioWare is just 50 people, with most of the best talent having left years ago. Plus, Mass Effect was never that popular. A lot of people don’t realise but Dragon Age was always the more popular of the two and the last Dragon Age was a flop. I say I understand EA’s logic but it’s still their fault. They owned BioWare and mismanaged them for years, starting back with Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem. Which unfortunately means the damage was done a long time ago and there’s probably no way back.Harry Sign of the timesWith these online problems with Street Fighter 5 and Warhorse getting hacked, I have a feeling this is going to become very common in the future. I imagine AI is behind both problems, it definitely is with Street Fighter if it’s a PHP issue, so weirdos are constantly going to be attacking developers, looking for secrets and who knows what else. With the decompiling craze and jailbreaking the Switch 2… I’m sure there’s a lot of people that think this is all very clever and interesting but if you were worried about the state of the games industry now just imagine how much worse it’s going to get when everything is pirated instantly and online games are constantly going down. If companies can’t make money from making video games they’re just going to stop, and I assume that’s not something anyone wants.Bosco Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk Failure to roll outI can only imagine how upset GC is at the leaked Transformers game trailer, given it looks pretty good. Given the quality of licensed games nowadays I’d love to see a new attempt at a proper G1 game but the problem is, unlike things like Star Wars Zero Company and Galactic Racer, I don’t think you can really do it on a budget. To transform from robot to vehicle you need a big open world to make it worthwhile… I think the reason the two War For Cybertron games are the only good ones is because they’re also the only big budget ones. It would’ve been nice if Hasbro had gone all out and ponied up the money, and I think that’s probably what they were thinking with the whole $1 billion dollar spend on video games thing. Except they had a second thought about it and realised what a risk it was. A shame but apparently there’s a new movie being made (Michael Bay again, unfortunately) so maybe we’ll get something then. It definitely seems like an idea that has never really had its moment in gaming.Cubby GC: The PlayStation 2 Armada game was also pretty good, but you’re not wrong. Beyond pod racingI knew I was going to like Star Wars: Galactic Racer but didn’t think I would be as addicted as I am. The graphics, atmosphere, story and characters, and top notch racing means I can’t put it down. If I have any gripes it’s I wish we could remap the controls. Also, some of the race routes could be a bit better marked, as I spent a lot of time crashing at first, but nothing beats the feeling when you do well in a race; it feels like you’ve really achieved something. Having my headphones on and bass shaker rocking my seat just doesn’t get any better, only adding VR for PlayStation 5 would send it to the stratosphere. Hope they release it for Switch 2, as I would love to play this on the go.Rob Never beaten on priceRE: David and Sony charging what they like for digital games when going all-digital. PSN has been a perma-sale since I stated using it in 2013. Due to discounted vouchers, I’ve never paid £70 for a day one digital game, never mind a five-year-old game. I just pre-ordered GTA 6 on PSN for £57.80 due to them. This PSN price tracker for Spider-Man 2, which released in October 2023, is typical of big triple-A pricing on the PSN store. Since first being discounted seven months after release four months is the longest it’s been back at full price, until it’s been put on sale again. The lowest price the game has ever gone is in the current sale, where the Digital Deluxe version is £31.99. CeX and Hit currently charge £34.99 and £34.85 for the standard physical version. If the PSN store ever stopped being a good place to shop, like it has been since I started using it, then I, like many I believe, would leave Sony’s ecosystem. I think Sony understand this, so will keep the status quo when going all digital. A big reason digital became pervasive is due to sales. Every game you’d be interested in is offered at impulse purchase prices many, many times and it’s why so many have large digital libraries. It’s not from paying £70 a pop for five-year-old games. I do appreciate people having a general distrust of Sony at the moment though. Regarding pricing the dynamic pricing experiments they are currently running on PSN make me a little uneasy about how it’ll be implemented or exploited if it becomes permanent.Simundo Insider infoWith regards to cheat codes in games, back in the day, cheat codes were regularly printed in the tips sections of games mags and the like. So why weren’t these codes ‘discovered’? By discovered I mean were, up, down, up, down, L, R, L, R, A, B discovered by journos or readers, or were they released by the publishers? And if so, why never bother releasing them!? Were they never meant for buyer consumption in the first place? 23 years and someone hacking it to find these codes is a bit much like, just saying.big boy bent GC: In most cases they were for playtesting the game and we suspect they were probably given to journos as well, to help review the games. Although that was before our time. Don't miss Gaming news! I think there’s a reason that open world games don’t have co-op and I don’t think it’s a technical issue. Elden Ring could have had full co-op but when would you ever see the other person? The moment they spotted something of interest they’d be off and you’d not see them again for hours, if ever. Never mind what happens when they die. You can do things like stop movement outside a certain range but even then the other person could easily go into a building and who knows where and you’d never notice. It’d be like a constant game of tag that got really frustrating very quickly. I actually find that interesting, because it’s a feature that most people would probably say they really wanted and yet the only thing that’s stopping it from happening is human nature. I’m sure a big game will try it at some point, but I assume it’s not GTA 6 or they would’ve mentioned it by now. Or maybe not, given how they keep calling it a single-player only game and are purposefully not saying anything about multiplayer for now. There are some mods for PC versions of various open world games, I believe, but I would lvove to see a developer try and do it officially. Maybe that’ll be the new Cyberpunk but I kind of doubt it.Mooney Inbox also-ransI was all ready to give that Hunter’s Moon a try, as I fancy a bit of folk horror in my video games. But £15 for something that only lasts two hours? That’s too much.Grackle I see there’s a Nintendo Indie World event today. They’re usually not very interesting but that does leave open the possibility of a final Nintendo Direct of the year, to announce The Duskbloods.
