Games Inbox: Which 2026 video game has the best melee combat?

Onimusha: Way Of The Sword – action master (Capcom) The Friday letters page pits Onimusha: The Way Of The Sword against Nioh 3, as readers try to understand the motives of GTA 6 nemesis Cyberleek. Games Inbox is a collection of our readers’ letters, comments, and opinions. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.uk Sword masterI was interested in your review of Gears Of War: E-Day, where you complained that the game didn’t have particularly good gunplay, even though that’s practically all you do in the game. I was also surprised, like most people, to learn that Control: Resonant was a melee combat game, which apparently didn’t turn out so well. You said that there were many games this year that had better gun action than Gears Of War but I wonder what game you feel has the best melee combat? I’m going to guess it wasn’t Marvel’s Wolverine, so maybe Nioh 3 or Onimusha: Way Of The Sword? I haven’t played any of these games so I’m interested to know which you’d recommend, as I think I could go for a bit of sword fighting right now. It really has been an amazing year for games. It’ll be years before I catch up and play all of the good ones.Jonesy GC: For us it’s definitely Onimusha: Way Of The Sword, although Nioh 3 is great too and sadly underrated. Want GTA 6 news? Roasted leekThat GTA 6 leaker cannot be playing with a full deck. He seemed to get away with everything and be forgotten (maybe even by Rockstar) and now he’s back with another even more pointless video because we know half of what it’s showing won’t even be in the game. All the nudity and the tank have got to be debug tricks, which also puts into question everything else seen, including the first person stuff. But why? What is he getting out of this? All he’s doing is increasing the chances that he’s going to spend a long time in jail, because there is absolutely no legitimate way he’s got hold of a fully working version of the game. The other question is why is he so bad at making videos? Except for, maybe, a first person view I don’t think we’ve learnt a single thing from anything he’s put out. He even had one video with Jason trying on earbuds but he never made it clear you could actually listen to radio stations with them. If he’s made money out of this then I guess that’s one thing, but obviously not so much money that he can afford to disappear to safety.Focus What’s your pleasure?Nice review of the new Hellraiser game. I’m also really surprised there hasn’t been a game of it before. Back in the 80s you got games of almost every horror movie, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th… even Texas Chain Saw Massacre got a game back in the day. They were all rubbish but they all happened. Maybe Hellraiser was viewed as just too messed up, and I guess there isn’t any real action in the film, but it’s still surprising. I’m very interested in the new game though as I can put up with a bit of jank and dodgy combat if it’s as true to the original spirit as it sounds. I’m really surprised that it has so much sexual stuff in it. An American developer would never do that, so I’m not surprised to find out it was a European dev. I appreciate it not being full price as well, makes me even more likely to pick it up.Kimball Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk Instant scarcityHas anyone else noticed how downhill Amazon has gone recently for buying games? I use them as they are cheaper and usually stock lesser known Japanese role-playing games and visual novels, but I have been having lots of trouble with some of their new releases recently This has happened for both pre-orders and recent releases, where it says the game is being dispatched on a set date and then on the day I get a delay email with no confirmed date for delivery. This has happened to me twice this week and has started to become a common occurrence and I’m getting fed up with it. Their prices aren’t as cheap as they used to be either. I have moved a couple of pre-orders to Smyths, as I can’t trust Amazon anymore. Is there a safe and reliable website that people can recommend I use in future?Simon GC: This isn’t necessarily Amazon’s fault as video games are being made in ever smaller amounts nowadays, to the point where even pre-orders don’t guarantee stores will get in enough copies. The PlayStation move to all-digital won’t be a switch that’s turned off, it’ll be a gradual decrease over time. Don't miss Gaming news! I suppose if you want a skin, or whatever it is, of Hollow Knight then you probably already own the game but even so, the fact that such a nonsense bit of DLC is more expensive than the game itself feels so wrong. Unfortunately, it’s a very clear sign of where the priorities are for a lot of modern gamers. You’ve got a choice of buying an amazing and original, and really cheap, indie game or some pointless cosmetic. Far too many people are going to choose the cosmetics, if not of Hollow Knight then something else at least.Mastar Relatively quickI really have no idea what developers mean nowadays when they say a game will be out sooner than the last one. There’s been a few that have said that lately, Gears of War being the latest, and its so meaningless unless they give some kind of vague date. If Gears Of War: E-Day, for example, took seven years what do they mean by quicker? Five years would be quicker but I wouldn’t describe it as quick. But I also can’t imagine it been earlier than that because I don’t think it’s physically possible to make a modern looking game that quick anymore. Or is Microsoft going to use AI and it’ll be out next year? I can just imagine the outrage if that’s what they’re planning but I don’t think even Microsoft is that dumb. I also don’t think AI would do anything to improve the speed anyway. If all you want is slop then I suppose so, but nobody’s going to pay £70 for half-baked rubbish that wasn’t even made by a human. I think we just have to be accept that we’re only ever getting a maximum of two entries in whatever franchise per generation, like the reader was saying yesterday about the next Zelda. Unless you do what Activision did with Call Of Duty, and set up multiple developer to work in rotation, but the wheels have fallen off even that now. When they set that up games took three years to make, so they had three developers, but that’s nowhere near enough anymore.Cribbens Boxy but goodReally happy to hear that the Star Wars Zero Company dev has been able to bring people back. Hopefully they’re able to rehire everyone and they can get started on some DLC as soon as possible. The game’s great but there’s so much more they could do with it. A lot of that might need a sequel but they can do a lot before that, like adding an endless mode, more aliens, more droids, more weapons, more maps… heck, just make more of everything. It’s Star Wars so there’s a bazillion things in canon already, before you even need to make anything up. I do hope they give you a better ship though, the original one is so boring. It’s just a box with a couple of Y-wing engines on the side. I know it’s supposed to be a lived-in universe but it’s usually got more style than that.Tronk Previous ownerI think this has been covered before but I read that Richard Garriott, aka Lord British, is getting the rights back to Ultima. Not because he bought it but something about you get it back automatically after 35 years if the other company isn’t using it. I don’t quite understand how it works, because EA has made Ultima games relatively recently, even if nobody bought them, but apparently they’ve agreed to give it back and Garriott has even asked them if they want to publish whatever he makes. As you can see, I’m no legal expert, but it makes me wonder if this could happen with other dead franchises. Parasite Eve is based on a book so hopefully that author can have the rights back and maybe get someone other than Square Enix to make the game. Or maybe Ridge Racer from Bandai Namco or any of the old Bullfrog stuff from EA, like Populous and Black & White. Heck, EA has killed off so many developers they’ve got a graveyard of games that are never going to get a new entry unless someone else makes it, from Command & Conquer to American McGee’s Alice. But the big one for me, especially as it has a clear original creator, is Metal Gear. I don’t see how Konami can ever make a proper new one themselves, so why not just give it back to Kojima? I guess he’s making that spiritual sequel now, but I’d love this to become a thing that happens more regularly.Wigston Inbox also-ransI’ve got a feeling the GTA 6 leaker is back because the money he earn has gone. Well, you know what they say, a fool and his money are soon parted and he must be a fool to rub Rockstar and Take-Two up the wrong way, because they will catch him.David I’ve been playing Gears Of War: E-Day on Game Pass too and I have to agree with the reader on Thursday. In fact, I’ve got about halfway through (you can tell because it tells you all the chapters on the menu, whether you’ve got that far or not) and I’m not sure I’m going to see it all the way through. It’s just getting too samey.Flammie Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk The small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend.
