French Delegation Visits Kyiv ReabiCentre Treating Ukrainians With Severe War Injuries

An official French government delegation visited the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics in Kyiv on July 17 to review a joint project supporting the rehabilitation of Ukrainian military personnel and civilians wounded in Russia’s war. The delegation was headed by Muriel Lacoue-Labarthe, Special Envoy of the President of the French Republic for Ukraine’s Recovery and Reconstruction. During the visit, the delegation was presented with the results of a joint project aimed at equipping Ukrainian healthcare facilities, including the installation and operation of two Dessintey neurorehabilitation devices at ReabiCentre. Representatives of the center said the devices are used to rehabilitate patients with upper- and lower-limb amputations, helping them restore mobility and adapt to everyday life after severe injuries. ReabiCentre began operating in December 2024 at the initiative of philanthropist Oles Dovhyi. It was established at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics in response to the growing need for comprehensive rehabilitation services for Ukrainians seriously wounded in the war. The modern facility covers more than 500 square meters and is equipped to diagnose and rehabilitate patients with severe, multiple injuries to the limbs. The center has the capacity to provide treatment to more than 1,000 military personnel each year. The equipment used at ReabiCentre is unique in Ukraine. One of the rehabilitation systems allows patients to practice essential movements through interactive, game-based exercises. It stores individual patient data, evaluates the function of each joint and automatically develops a personalized treatment plan. The system also provides a visual analysis of a patient’s movements, allowing medical professionals to monitor progress during rehabilitation. A physician from the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics said the institute has been treating patients with severe mine and blast injuries since Russia first launched its war against Ukraine in 2014. Since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, the institute has been operating at the limits of its capacity, making assistance from international partners particularly important as the number of Ukrainians requiring long-term rehabilitation continues to grow.
