Finnair’s Cheap Avios Sale Offers A Shortcut To Status On American Flights And Access To Flagship Lounges

Finnair is selling 200,000 Avios for $2,170, and throwing in 20,000 points towards elite status. Those Avios can buy business class awards on Finnair, or move over to British Airways and Qatar Airways. And the status points can help you get into American Airlines Flagship lounges even when you’re flying domestic coach. The purchase alone gets you Finnair Silver, which is oneworld Ruby, and I don’t see much value in chasing Ruby. You get some airport priority on American and Alaska and a free checked bag. Finnair Gold, which is oneworld Sapphire, comes with lounge access including business class Flagship lounge access. The latest Frequent Miler on the Air episode walks through the sale and ways to leverage it. One Mile at a Time covered the offer when it launched. I’ve written about buying Finnair points to earn oneworld status since November 2020, and covered another version in December 2021. Those offers could get you all the way to Sapphire or Emerald without flying. This one is less generous for status, but the redeemable points are much more useful now that Finnair uses Avios than they were back then. What The Avios Cost Now The sale runs through November 16, 2026, ending at 4:59 p.m. Eastern. You need to have joined Finnair Plus before October 30 and have at least 50 Avios in your account. The purchase allowance has been reset for this offer: you can buy up to 200,000 even if you already hit the normal annual limit. The discount reaches 50% at 85,000 Avios. The best dollar pricing is available on purchases of 100,000 or more: 1.085 cents per Avios, before card rewards or shopping portal earnings. The purchase also generates tier points equal to 10% of the Avios bought. The podcast described paying in Japanese yen for about 1.06 cents apiece, then earning 3 points per dollar on an Atmos Rewards Summit card’s foreign purchases category. That yen price is no longer available and dollars are now the better deal. Purchases are processed by Points.com, not as airline tickets. Use a card with a strong return on otherwise unbonused spending. Finnair’s milestone rewards add another layer of benefits. A Basic member crossing 12,000 tier points receives 3,000 extra Avios. Starting at zero, and assuming that milestone hasn’t already been earned: Purchase Dollar Cost Avios Including Milestone Tier Points 120,000 Avios $1,302 123,000 12,000 150,000 Avios $1,627.50 153,000 15,000 200,000 Avios $2,170 203,000 20,000 The 120,000-point purchase works out to about 1.059 cents per Avios after the milestone. That’s slightly cheaper per point than buying the maximum. Existing Gold members don’t receive this Basic-tier milestone (Finnair only awards milestones within your own tier). Frequent Miler also flagged Rove at 1 mile per dollar and Extrabux at 1.6%–2% cash back as potential shopping portal optins to start with when buying the points. $1,302 would earn 1,302 Rove miles, which are also transferable to Finnair. Ruby Isn’t The Status I’d Spend Money Chasing Silver requires 15,000 tier points (not 20,000 as some discussions suggest, which is actually a separate milestone awarding two Finnair lounge passes). Buying 150,000 Avios already earns Silver from zero. Ruby gets you business class check-in and some seating and waitlist benefits. On American, it also means a free first checked bag and Group 4 boarding. Finnair Gold gives you oneworld business class lounge access, along with additional baggage and priority services. And because the status comes from Finnair rather than American or Alaska, American permits Flagship lounge access on eligible domestic trips as well. You can bring one guest. It doesn’t include Flagship Dining. You also get Admirals Club access and Alaska Lounge access when flying either airline. Gold also comes with four Finnair upgrade benefits covering one short-haul economy-to-business upgrade each or U.S.–Helsinki would use all four, requiring upgrade availability. You can also exchange all four for a two-for-one Finnair Classic economy or premium economy award. How To Get From This Sale To Sapphire Finnair Gold requires 45,000 tier points. Starting from zero, buying the maximum gives you 20,000. You can then exchange 22,500 Avios for 7,500 tier points. That leaves you with 27,500 tier points, 17,500 short of Gold, and 180,500 redeemable Avios if you received the Basic milestone. Finnair allows one exchange per personal tracking period, at three Avios per tier point, with a 500-tier-point minimum and a €10 online fee. The ceiling depends on your status when you exchange: 7,500 tier points for Basic or Silver, 22,500 for Gold, and 40,000 for Platinum or Platinum Lumo. An existing Gold member has a much easier renewal calculation. Buying 200,000 Avios generates 20,000 tier points, and converting 67,500 Avios adds 22,500. That’s 42,500 towards the 45,000 needed, leaving just 2,500 to earn if you started the period at zero. You’d retain 132,500 purchased Avios. For someone starting without status, American flights can fill the 17,500-point gap. Finnair’s earning chart for business class, including domestic flights with Finnair Silver status: J, C and D earn 250% of distance before the Silver bonus, or 275% with it. You’d need about 6,364 flown miles to generate 17,500 tier points. R and I earn 150%, or 165% with the Silver bonus. You’d need about 10,607 flown miles. Check your account’s personal tracking period before doing any of this. It isn’t the calendar year, and buying points or reaching Silver doesn’t restart it. Purchase, conversion and remaining flight credit need to fall in the same period. Once you reach Gold, the status lasts for the rest of that period plus the following 12 months. You Can Use Credit Card Points For The Final Top-Up You don’t have to buy Avios to use the conversion feature. If you’re 3,000 tier points short of Gold, you can transfer in 9,000 Avios and exchange them, paying the €10 online fee. Capital One transfers directly to Finnair at 1:1. Or transfer a bank currency into British Airways, then move those Avios into Finnair. Qatar Avios can go through British Airways to reach Finnair, too. Finnair’s current linking rules require an account at least 30 days old, matching names and email addresses, and two-factor authentication. That’s important even for getting the 50 Avios needed for the sale since an account opened shortly before the October 30 cutoff may qualify for the promotion but still be too new for an Avios-program transfer. The Avios You’re Buying Are Valuable, Too I covered Finnair’s improved award opportunities in May 2024. You can redeem through Finnair or move Avios 1:1, without a transfer fee, to British Airways and onward to Qatar or other Avios programs as well. Topics on this page
