Farmers’ self-respect will be restored: Minister T. Siddique

Restoring the self-respect of farmers and strengthening the agricultural sector will be among the key objectives of the State government, Agriculture Minister T. Siddique has said.He was inaugurating the ATMA (Agricultural Technology Management Agency) farmer award ceremony organised by the Peravoor block panchayat at Peravoor.Mr. Siddique said society often failed to recognise the contribution of farmers. Agriculture is increasingly being viewed as a second-rate occupation, though it is one of the most essential responsibilities for sustaining human life, he said.The Minister said the government was committed to bringing the younger generation back to agriculture. As part of this, agricultural clubs have been started in 500 schools across the State. The government would soon take a decision on awarding grace marks to students engaged in agricultural activities, he added.Mr. Siddique also stressed the need to promote organic farming to reduce dependence on vegetables brought from other States. The government has introduced the Krishi Shakthi scheme for women farmers as part of efforts to strengthen the agricultural sector.K.A. Jinto of Kanichar panchayat received the award for the best mixed farmer, while Sheeja Manoj won the award for the best woman farmer. V. Babu of Kolayad panchayat was adjudged the best Scheduled Tribe farmer. Ajith Peter of Peravoor panchayat received the award for the best dairy farmer, while T.U.
