A BRITISH card chain is set to close down a popular branch in just a few weeks, as a major 50% closing down sale is launched. The retailer is slashing prices to help shift stock before it closes for good. It will come as a blow to shoppers in the area who have, in the past, praised the store’s “lovely” staff and “nice” selection of cards. It comes as a Cardzone branch in Witham is also due to close down at the end of September, with a 90% sale launched. This brand, which also owns Card Centre and Clintons, also shuttered a branch in Newport in July and a branch in Didcot in January of this year. Several other Cardzone branches have been shut down around the country since 2023 as high street businesses suffer from higher costs and a dip in footfall. In its latest financial statements, the company said: “The business leases the majority of its locations, which comes with inherent risks. “Most stores operate under leases lasting less than five years and there are no guarantees that lease renegotiations will be successful.” Most read in Money It comes amid a challenging time for Britain’s retail scene. Wynsors World of Shoes is closing down 17 branches after it warned of rent and job cuts earlier this summer. Meanwhile, up to 150 TG Jones stores are at risk of closure, after the chain was rebranded from WH Smith last year. Earlier this year, Claire’s Accessories collapsed into administration, closing all 154 of its standalone sites in April.
