While the story about Owen and Allie's unexpected connection is the A-plot of the film, the underlying world-building of the movie is centered on a law that aims to keep people from having premarital sex. The plot of the inventive romcom is kicked off on the one night of the year where the Mandate is rendered null and void, allowing people to hook up with as many people as they want to. This sets the stage for a comedy of errors that tells a love story while also being a social satire about how laws can try to control people. Here's everything you need to know about "The Mandate." What Is "The Mandate" In One Night Only? "The Mandate" is central to the world of One Night Only. In this universe, a political movement introduced a new law to the United States public that made sexual intercourse illegal for people who aren't married -- except for one night in the year, where that law is rendered null and void until the morning. The law is enforced by the local police and monitored by a tattoo that everyone gets when they turn 18. If the tattoo is red, they aren't allowed to have sex. This government mandate isn't flawless, though. Allie's roommate casually reveals that gay people have been skirting "decency" laws for centuries. This suggests there are workarounds for people who are willing to break the law. However, the film also shows several people being arrested for breaking the mandate, suggesting there are genuine consequences for getting caught breaking the Mandate, even though those full punishments are left unexplained. Who Created The Mandate In One Night Only? The Mandate was created by the United States Senate three years prior to the events of One Night Only. During an interview with a sitting senator early in the film, the Mandate is described as a "mandate of the voters" despite several people having protest signs against the law in their windows. It's unclear how this law went into place and what the debates surrounding it were. There are suggestions that people have been protesting and resisting the mandate since it passed. It's also notable during a news report from China that the Mandate is only an American phenomenon, which the senator defends as indicative of America's "forward thinking" mentality. In response, the Chinese reporting is dismissive of the Mandate, hinting at part of the social satire at play in the film. Is Anyone Trying To End The Mandate? Although the Mandate has been in effect for a few years, there seems to be an underlying movement to push back against the law. Both Allie and Owen are shown to have anti-mandate signs in their respective windows, while other people across New York City can also be seen with similar signs. This suggests that there is a movement to get the law repealed, although it's unclear how successful it has been. It seems like it is a national law as well, with the Conservative-coded senator seen earlier in the film suggesting that the Mandate gained a certain level of popularity among Red states. No one actively fights against the law in the film. The ending of the movie, which takes place a year later on the next day the mandate is lifted, suggests that any resistance to the law is slow-moving. However, there's still a chance that people could be elected into power who could bring down the law. What Happens If You Break The Mandate? The Mandate is treated as a fairly important law in One Night Only, with people who break it coming under police scrutiny. You can be arrested for breaking the mandate, as well as abusing the system. This is something Allie finds out when her first potential hook-up of the night turns out to be getting hunted by the authorities for breaking the mandate with over a dozen people. An older man is also seen bragging about his multiple arrests for breaking the mandate. This suggests that while there is a punishment for breaking the law, it isn't a serious penalty like extended jail time. Notably, the police carry out the investigation but seem to recognize the problems with it, as they can only bluntly warn Allie about breaking it with a certain level of exhaustion. The Mandate Is Central To What Makes One Night Only Work The Mandate is the harshest piece of social satire in One Night Only. The Mandate is a comically over-the-top piece of overreach from the government, with a smiling senator seemingly in denial of the human nature that has simply been bottled up and unleashed once a year. The Mandate hasn't made people less willing to have one-night stands; it's just focused it entirely into a single evening. It's a clear metaphor for how laws that mandate human behavior are just manipulating the law to their favor without actually "correcting" anything. There's also a darker layer to the satire, given how people have just accepted this intrusion and culture has responded in ways that overly commercialize the event.
