Elon Musk's social media platform X, aka Twitter, is ending its revenue sharing programme for users. The platform has announced that the last payout for users will be on September 11, and it has already stopped accepting new signups.Elon Musk's X is shutting down its programme that paid users to post.X, aka Twitter, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, has just made one of the biggest changes in years. The platform is shutting down its creator revenue share programme, with final payments going out to all eligible users on September 7.X announced the shutdown with an article on the platform. New signups for the programme were also closed starting August 7.The revenue sharing programme allowed users on X to earn money for posting on the platform based on engagement. Though only users who paid for premium X accounts were eligible. This move comes just days after X’s product head Nikita Bier announced that he was stepping down. Though he remains an advisor to the platform. Why is X shutting down revenue sharing?X’s creators’ head Allegra Jacchia explained the reason for shutting down the programme. She claimed that “its incentives were misaligned.” Instead of creators bringing new content to the platform, many were reusing content from others in a bid to get a payout. To tackle this, X is starting a new original content reward programme. Jacchia explained, “We could have kept adding more rules and exceptions, but ultimately the better decision was to start fresh and build a programme designed from day one to reward originality.” X says that the older programme ended up encouraging people to not create enough original content. Only creators who are part of the existing revenue sharing programme can join the new programme for now.But before we take a look at what the new programme has in store, keep in mind that X has planned three payouts for revenue sharing before it is shut down. Current users will receive final payouts on August 14 and August 28 under the standard payout schedule, and a final payout for earnings accrued through September 7, expected on or around September 11.What’s X’s new programme for creators? The original content rewards programme, X says, is meant to reward creators who bring original ideas, expertise, reporting, creativity and commentary to the platform. That is, it focuses on creators who actually bring something new and creative, instead of resharing or posting low-effort content.Under the new system, eligible creators will earn money from qualified impressions generated by their original content. Payouts will be issued every two weeks, provided the account and content continue to meet programme requirements.Explaining what it considers original content, X said the programme is intended to reward creators who contribute original value to conversation on the platform. It defined original content as material personally created by the user that reflects their own voice, perspective, expertise or creativity. This can include threads, videos, memes, original reporting, analysis, commentary, reactions, photos, graphics, illustrations and other creative work. Content can also qualify if it materially and meaningfully transforms existing content through original context, analysis, narration, humour or creative editing. How to join X’s original content rewards programme? To apply for X’s new programme, you must be at least 18 years old and live in a country where the programme is available. You must either have a Personal or Business account, and be subscribed to a premium X plan. Your account must have at least 500 verified followers, and record at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days. The impressions here do not include those on replies. You must also regularly post original content.X says that applications can be made through Creator Studio and that outcomes will be communicated within three business days. Users whose applications are rejected can file one appeal, and if that fails, they can apply again after 90 days if they still meet all requirements. The first payout for the new programme will be issued on August 28, while existing revenue sharing creators who enroll after becoming eligible on or after September 8 will receive their first payment on September 25.- EndsPublished By: Armaan AgarwalPublished On: Aug 8, 2026 10:53 IST
