The E-2D Advanced Hawkeye is moving toward a major technology upgrade that will improve how crews detect threats, manage information and operate the aircraft. Northrop Grumman has completed a government-led critical design review for the aircraft’s Block II upgrade, clearing the program to begin integration and testing. The company plans to start that work immediately, with upgraded E-2D aircraft scheduled for delivery by the end of the decade. The Block II effort is described as the largest upgrade to the platform since its development. The upgrade focuses on the aircraft’s mission systems, combining new hardware and software to improve situational awareness and reduce the workload on its crew. The goal is also to keep the aircraft adaptable as threats and military requirements change. The work is being built around a modular open systems approach, allowing newer technologies to be incorporated without requiring a complete redesign of the aircraft. The approach is intended to make future upgrades easier while supporting the long-term operation of the Navy’s E-2D fleet. Modular systems extend aircraft life A key part of the modernization is the use of commercial off-the-shelf technology. Using widely available components can help reduce costs and give the program more flexibility as new technologies become available. The Block II upgrade will also be incorporated directly into the E-2D production line. That means newly built aircraft can receive the upgraded systems during production, while aircraft already in service can be retrofitted. Expanding both production and retrofit capacity is intended to help modernize more aircraft over time. “Completing the Block II critical design review reflects the dedication and expertise of our team and partners. Operating from the air, it is designed to help military forces detect and track activity and maintain a broader picture of what is happening around them. More capability, fewer disruptions The modernization is aimed not only at adding new capabilities but also at keeping the aircraft relevant for years to come. Its modular architecture is intended to make future technology insertions less disruptive, reducing the need for major overhauls each time a new capability is required. Northrop Grumman will apply the Block II configuration to both new aircraft and the existing fleet. This creates a path for older E-2Ds to receive the same modernization rather than relying solely on newly produced aircraft to bring the fleet up to date. The broader E-2D program supports more than 4,000 jobs at 411 companies across 40 US states, according to Northrop Grumman. The Block II upgrade therefore represents both a technology refresh for an existing aircraft and an effort to maintain the platform as a long-term part of the US defense fleet.
