While 1080p is still the popular resolution in PC gaming, good 1440p monitors have become affordable. However, games these days have become demanding, with some requiring capable GPUs to run smoothly even at the FHD resolution with the visual settings turned up. Moreover, it's not just the raw performance of the GPU that matters. The VRAM plays a significant role as well. A GPU with less than 8GB of VRAM, for example, is becoming increasingly difficult to recommend for modern games in 2026. My 4GB graphics card, for example, holds up well when playing older games and esports titles, but the same can't be said when playing recent releases. My 4GB GPU is fine until I play new games Older titles run fine, but newer games push the GPU past its limits Before I tried to play some of the recent releases on my GPU, I didn't have many complaints about my 4GB GPU. The graphics card I have can still handle older AAA titles and esports games reasonably well, especially at the 1080p resolution with tweaked settings. While competitive games and older AAA titles don't make the GPU sweat much, the limits of its 4GB VRAM start to show with 2026 releases. Titles like Borderlands 4, 007 First Light, and Mafia: The Old Country launch, but the experience isn't as good as one would expect. Even at 1080p, it's hard to get near 60 FPS, especially without upscaling. Of course, FSR in performance mode doesn't make the game look too bad, but when textures are dialed too low, heavy upscaling can't do much. More system RAM doesn't solve the 4GB GPU problem High system memory can't tackle low dedicated VRAM issue It goes without saying that having plenty of fast system RAM can help with running demanding games. However, the underlying issue with low VRAM doesn't get solved. When the GPU runs out of dedicated video memory, some data can spill over into the system RAM, but this memory isn't as fast or as accessible as the GPU's own VRAM. So, on a PC with 32GB of RAM, for example, a 4GB GPU will struggle to run games at moderate visual settings. Even at the lowest preset, you can get stutters, inconsistent frame times, and slower texture loading when data spills over into the less accessible system memory. Higher VRAM wouldn't fix every problem Some games expose the horsepower limitations of the GPU While low VRAM is one reason games may not run smoothly, gaming performance doesn't rely solely on video memory. The Radeon RX 6500 XT, for instance, is a 4GB GPU, and it wouldn't be able to deliver noticeably higher frame rates with 8GB VRAM. Without a GPU with enough horsepower to deliver a good frame rate, more memory headroom will not do much. This underlying performance of the graphics card makes the 4GB problem more complicated. PowerColor Reaper AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT The Radeon RX 9070 XT is an upper-end RDNA 4 GPU with 16GB of GDDR6 VRAM. I wouldn't recommend buying a 4GB GPU for a new gaming PC 4GB VRAM still works, but leaves too little room After using a 4GB GPU in 2026, I wouldn't recommend one for a new gaming PC. Of course, such GPUs still make sense, especially when the budget is too tight. If you already own one and your system runs less demanding games and esports titles, there's no need to upgrade to an upper-end GPU just yet. On the other hand, for those who are planning to build a new gaming PC, I would recommend spending extra to get a GPU with at least 8GB of VRAM. If the target resolution is 1440p, a 12GB graphics card would make more sense, but then again, the current market isn't really in a good spot. As for my 4GB GPU, it's still perfectly usable for the games that it was designed to handle. I just need to dial my expectations down and probably won't buy any more new AAA releases until I upgrade my GPU.
