Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond. Dungeons & Dragons has inspired no shortage of video games over the years, from classics such as Neverwinter Nights (RIP Bioware) to modern essentials like Baldur's Gate 3, which directly incorporates the tabletop RPG's fifth-edition rules and character-building systems into its sprawling fantasy adventure. While these games have introduced countless players to the Forgotten Realms, they've also demonstrated just how versatile the D&D formula can be, whether it's used to tell an epic, world-saving story or a much smaller, more personal one. Now, an exciting new game is combining the fantasy role-playing elements and exploration from Dungeons & Dragons with the cozy, everyday appeal of Stardew Valley and its pixel-art style. This upcoming release promises a fresh take on the fantasy RPG experience, offering something that should immediately appeal to fans of both franchises. For players who have ever dreamed of settling down and building a life in a D&D-inspired fantasy world, look no further (via Steam). Emberville is an upcoming pixel-art RPG that takes the Stardew Valley formula into a dark-fantasy realm and allows players to rebuild the town of Emberville by taking on unique quests and helping out the local townsfolk. Developed by Cygnus Cross, the game mixes the familiar pleasures of farming, crafting, and building a home with an action RPG that looks quite a bit more dangerous than a typical day in Pelican Town. Players begin by awakening without their memories in the Vitromotus, an enormous magical prison. Navigating its depths eventually leads them to the ruins of Emberville, where players will start rescuing survivors and defeat the creatures lurking below. Much like Stardew Valley, the settlement itself needs some help to rebuild. Each person you rescue will introduce new quests, professions, rewards, mechanics, etc., while players gather resources and help restore damaged buildings around town. "As Emberville restores itself, it will become a living hub shaped by your deeds," and aside from rebuilding the town, players can develop a personal estate, decorate their surroundings, cook, farm, craft equipment, and gradually turn their new space into a cozy little oasis away from the chaos. The game has an original dark fantasy mythos as a backdrop to the narrative that fans of the genre will definitely appreciate. The Vitromotus is filled with forgotten tunnels, ruins, survivor settlements, and dangerous environments, all tied to the mystery of kymia. The developers describe kymia as "a mysterious power born from emotions" that can return the prison's inhabitants to life. Its influence has also created strange biomes and monstrous creatures, giving players plenty of reasons to venture beyond the comparative safety of town and uncover the secrets behind their imprisonment. Combat is another major selling point. The game encourages players to "develop your own fighting style" through a flexible class system combining melee, ranged attacks, and magic. Players can "unlock unique weapon-bound combos" and chain strikes together, while learned classes can contribute active and passive skills to other builds. The developers also emphasize experimenting with techniques to discover "the build and weapon category that better suits your playstyle," suggesting player freedom for RPG fans who enjoy fine-tuning their characters. Further, you can "create and customize your character with dozens of options of hair styles, beards, facial features, colors, and more." Combined with the ability to personalize a homestead, each adventure has a distinctive and personalized feel even as players navigate the game's darker story. Emberville officially launches into Early Access on Steam tomorrow, October 27, 2026, with a free demo currently available to try. Progress from the demo will carry into the paid Early Access release, which is launching at $29.99, with a 10% introductory discount. Cygnus Cross plans to expand the game with additional biomes, quests, and other content throughout Early Access, meaning fans of this unique dungeon-crawling meets Stardew-style adventure are in for plenty more surprises in the future.
