The Last Of Us Season 3 Turning OG Hero Into A Villain Detailed By Returning Star: "I'm The Boogeyman"

Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Last of Us season 2. EXCLUSIVE: Gabriel Luna comments on Tommy's dark turn in The Last of Us season 3. Based on the acclaimed Naughty Dog video game franchise, HBO's The Last of Us first aired in 2023 before returning for season 2 in 2025. Luna plays Tommy, the brother of Pedro Pascal's Joel, in both seasons, and the character's good-guy persona is now set to be challenged in season 3, as Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) becomes a central focus. In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for The Terminal List season 2, Luna teases that some big Tommy moments are to come in The Last of Us season 3. The actor explains that the shift in perspective makes his character far from a black-and-white figure, and he takes on different personas depending on one's point of view. Check out Luna's comment below: Oh, I think it's all a matter of perspective. To them, I'm the boogeyman. To us, I'm just there for my niece, and I'm trying to get out of town. I love that bit in the game, when you kind of encounter Tommy that way. I'm trying not to say too much, but there's some great Tommy stuff in this season, and we're so proud of it, and we're ready to bring it home. In The Last of Us season 2, Tommy is a key figure in the community of Jackson in Wyoming, leading survivors alongside his wife, Maria (Rutina Wesley). After a heartfelt reunion between Tommy and Joel in season 1, season 2 rips the two brothers apart once more. Joel is killed when Abby and her crew find him, with the season then turning into a revenge mission for Ellie (Bella Ramsey). The Last of Us season 2 ending sees Abby holding Tommy at gunpoint in the theater, his fate left in the balance. Luna's comment suggests Tommy doesn't die here, which would be in keeping with the games. After a gunshot and a cut to black, the show switches to Abby's point of view several days earlier. Without delving too far into spoilers, game Tommy plays a crucial role in Abby's story. A large portion of The Last of Us Part II puts the player in Abby's shoes, and Tommy appears as a villain, hunting her and her crew. Though Tommy is seeking revenge for Joel's death, from Abby's perspective, he is a monster just like his brother. To Abby, Joel is not the complex hero the player/ audience has come to know, but the ruthless killer who murdered her father in cold blood. It remains unclear just how closely The Last of Us season 3 will adhere to the game, but it is confirmed to be the final season of the hit show. Season 2 made several big changes to the source material, including having Tommy not be present for Joel's death. Tommy is thus not as coldly vengeful in the show as he is in the games, and it remains to be seen how this will affect the upcoming episodes. Along with Luna, Ramsey, and Dever, season 3 is set to feature the return of Isabela Merced as Dina, Jefrrey Wright as Isaac, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, and Spencer Lord as Owen. Due to scheduling conflicts, Danny Ramirez won't be returning as Manny, with Jorge Lendeborg Jr. set to take on the role. Newcomers include John Goodman, Laura Bailey, Ian Alexander, Patrick Wilson, Clea DuVall, and Jason Ritter. Luna is evidently playing his cards close to his chest when it comes to The Last of Us season 3, but Tommy could seemingly play a large role in the action to come. With some of the new episodes set to take place from Abby's point of view, audiences could be about to see Tommy in a very different light.
