Drink-drive lecturer admits killing couple in head-on collision

See more Daily Mail on Google - save us as a Preferred Source Published: 13:57 EDT, 3 September 2026 | Updated: 14:25 EDT, 3 September 2026 A college lecturer has admitted killing a husband and wife in a drink-drive crash after a Christmas night out.Sophie Hynd finished the last day of term at Fife College, in Kirkcaldy, on December 19, 2025, by going for drinks with colleagues at a JD Wetherspoon pub in the town.After downing prosecco, spirits and shots, the 33-year-old drove off in her Nissan Qashqai and smashed head-on into a Volkswagen Polo being driven by Jatinder Kaur, 48, whose husband Satwant Singh, 64, daughter Parveet Kaur, 19, and a ten-year-old boy were also in the car.At the High Court in Edinburgh on Thursday, Hynd pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of the married couple by driving dangerously on the B981 road in Cluny and causing the child to be severely injured.She admitted being ‘impaired by alcohol’ and driving erratically by swerving and ‘entering the opposing carriageway’.Hynd wept as Judge Michael O’Grady, KC, described her crime as ‘very grave’ and remanded her in custody.The court heard that Hynd began drinking at around 1.30pm on the day of the crash. At 8.30pm, she and her friends moved to another pub where one onlooker described her as being ‘pretty drunk’.Two hours later Hynd went to her Kirkcaldy home before going out again to see her boyfriend.She drove along the B981 where, minutes before the fatal crash, a motorist phoned 999 after pulling over because Hynd was tailgating them and swerving onto the opposing carriageway.Prosecutor Lynsey Rodger said: ‘Jatinder Kaur was driving at approximately 31mph. Jatinder Kaur and husband Satwant Singh were killed in a head-on smash with a drunk driver‘At about 10.57pm, as she approached a blind dip and bend, the accused crossed the double solid white lines and went onto the opposing lane of carriageway. Parveet Kaur became aware of the accused’s vehicle travelling towards them in the middle of the road, and said, “Mum, car!”‘Whilst in the opposing carriageway, the accused collided head-on with the deceased’s vehicle.’Jatinder Kaur was pronounced dead at the scene, while Mr Singh was taken to hospital where he died on December 21. The boy suffered internal injuries and a broken leg. Parveet Kaur sustained minor injuries.Advocate Ewen Roy, acting for Hynd, said he would reserve mitigation until sentencing next month. Judge O’Grady told Hynd: ‘The charge you have pled guilty to is very grave indeed. You have left in your wake a dead husband and wife.’After the hearing, the couple’s three surviving children said: ‘We could never have prepared for losing our parents in this way. We miss them more than words can express.’
