Delhi teen grabs iron pipe to avoid falling on flooded road, gets electrocuted

A 14-year-old boy was electrocuted while trying to save himself from falling in water accumulated in a lane in Delhi's Uttam Nagar. The victim has been identified Kaushal. The teenager was on his way to his aunt's house when the deadly incident took place. While walking through an alley that was inundated after a spell of heavy rainfall, a motorcycle passed close to him. In an attempt to avoid falling into the water, Kaushal grabbed an iron pipe attached to an electric pole, which had an earthing wire inside. As soon as the boy came in contact with the pipe, he received an electric shock and became stuck to it. A woman sitting nearby witnessed the incident and began shouting for help.Local residents rushed to the spot and used a wooden stick to separate Kaushal from the pipe. However, by the time he was taken to the hospital, he had died. Kaushal was the only son of his parents and had a six-year-old younger sister. The family has alleged that negligence by the Delhi government and the electricity department led to the boy's death.Locals have also alleged that the area frequently becomes waterlogged even after light rainfall, while sewage water remains accumulated in the lane even when there is no downpour. They also said that had the lane not been flooded, Kaushal would not have needed to hold the iron pipe near the electricity pole in an attempt to protect himself from falling. His family is now demanding justice and holding the authorities responsible for the incident. Police are investigating the matter.According to the police, the exact cause of death will be established only after the post-mortem report is received. The incident has also led to anger among local residents over the absence of Uttam Nagar MLA, Pawan Sharma, who belongs to Delhi's ruling BJP, and also the local councillor. Locals say they did not visit the bereaved family.Meanwhile, former Congress MLA Mukesh Sharma visited the family and blamed the local administration and the Delhi government for the incident. He demanded that an FIR be registered against those responsible, including the electricity department, and that adequate compensation be provided to the family.Sharma also demanded that a murder case be registered against those found responsible for the boy's death.- Ends(Based on inputs from Manoranjan Kumar)Published On: Sep 6, 2026 08:01 IST
