Cyclist, 16, dies in hospital after collision with car as cops arrest man, 47, over ‘dangerous driving’ near stadium

Credit: BPM A TEENAGE cyclist has died in hospital after being hit by a car near to Birmingham City’s stadium. Officers descended on the scene in Small Heath in the early hours of Friday morning where a 16-year-old boy was fatally struck by a car. The boy was raced to hospital with serious injuries but tragically passed away on Saturday, the force said. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! His family are being supported by specialist officers. Cops have now arrested a man, aged 47, on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving – he remains in custody. A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: “We are still urging anyone who has information or footage to get in touch with us. “You can contact us via Live Chat on our website, or by calling 101, and quote log 580 of 28 August.” A police cordon was in place at the scene outside the football ground on Friday. West Midlands Police previously said that they believed a silver Vauxhall Astra abandoned at the scene was involved in the incident as they attempted to track down the driver. Most read in The Sun Det Sgt Julie Lyman, from SCIU, said at the time: “I am appealing directly to the driver of this car to contact us urgently. “A teenage boy has very serious injuries and we are working hard to establish exactly what happened and who was responsible. “I would also urge anyone else with information or footage to contact us as soon as possible.” An ambulance service spokeswoman said: “We were called to reports of an RTC involving a car and a pushbike at the junction of Cattell Road and Tilton Road in Nechells, Birmingham, at 5.23am and sent three ambulances, a paramedic officer and a MERIT trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic to the scene. “On arrival, a man, the cyclist, was found in a critical condition. “He received specialist trauma care before being conveyed under emergency driving conditions to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.”
