CWG 2026 Day 5 wrap: India's medal haul hits 10 after an entertaining all-nighter

It was another packed all-nighter for viewers in India, and one that was well worth staying awake for. As the action stretched into the early hours on Tuesday, the Indian contingent enjoyed one of its most productive days of the Commonwealth Games, collecting six medals across athletics, para athletics and weightlifting while several others kept their podium hopes alive in boxing and track and field. The night belonged to India's field athletes. Sarvesh Kushare scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal in the men's high jump at the Commonwealth Games, while Sharmila Dhankar delivered another landmark moment by clinching the country's first-ever Commonwealth Games para athletics gold. Weightlifting once again underlined its status as India's biggest medal contributor as Valluri Ajaya Babu, Gyaneshwari Yadav and Bindyarani Devi added three more podium finishes to swell the country's tally. There was plenty happening away from the podium as well. India's boxing team moved closer to another rich medal haul after Sachin Siwach, Ankush and Sakshi Chaudhary advanced to the quarterfinals, while M Sreeshankar and Lokesh Sathyanathan safely negotiated the men's long jump qualifiers. National record holder Tejas Shirse created history by becoming the first Indian to reach the Commonwealth Games men's 110m hurdles final before an injury derailed his medal hopes, while the country's fastest man Gurindervir Singh endured a disappointing exit from the 100m heats.Commonwealth Games 2026, Day 5: Highlights KUSHARE REACHES NEW HEIGHTSSarvesh Kushare produced the defining performance of India's day by becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal in the men's high jump at the Commonwealth Games. The national record holder cleared 2.25m, matching Jamaica's Romaine Beckford before losing out on gold on countback after both athletes failed all three attempts at 2.28m. Beckford took gold, while England's Jack Kimani claimed bronze with a best jump of 2.20m. The silver bettered Tejaswin Shankar's bronze from Birmingham 2022 and made Kushare India's most successful men's high jumper at the Commonwealth Games. It also marked the 31-year-old's maiden medal at a major multi-sport event, adding to a breakthrough season in which he became the first Indian high jumper to finish on the podium at a Diamond League meet.India also had Adarsh Ram finish fifth with a clearance of 2.15m, while Tejaswin Shankar retired after failing to clear 2.05m on his opening attempt, opting to preserve himself for the decathlon later this week.PARA ATHLETICS DOUBLE DELIGHTIndia's para athletics contingent delivered one of the most memorable moments of the Games.Sharmila Dhankar ended India's 20-year wait for a Commonwealth Games para athletics medal by winning gold in the women's F57 shot put with a season-best throw of 9.81m, becoming the country's first-ever Commonwealth Games para athletics champion. The celebrations doubled after teammate Shilpa Shyla was upgraded to bronze following a successful Indian protest.
