The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday staged a protest at the Mangalagiri-Tadepalli Municipal Corporation office, demanding allotment of house sites and house pattas to poor families in the Mangalagiri Assembly constituency. The protesters gathered at the main gate of the corporation office with applications seeking house sites and pattas. Tension prevailed for over half an hour after the police prevented them from entering the office. A brief altercation reportedly took place when some protesters pushed open the gate. They later staged a sit-in at the gate.Addressing the gathering, CPI(M) State secretariat member Ch. Babu Rao alleged that the government was showing greater urgency in providing land and other facilities to corporate companies while delaying the allotment of house sites to the poor.He questioned whether even a single eligible person in Mangalagiri had been allotted a two-cent house site in the past two-and-a-half years. He also alleged that several beneficiaries under the ‘Mana Illu–Mana Lokesh’ initiative had been issued pattas without completing the registration process or facilitating bank loans for house construction.Mr. Babu Rao said the alliance parties had promised before the elections to provide two cents of house site in urban areas and three cents in rural areas to eligible poor families. However, the promise had not been fulfilled, he alleged. He urged poor families to question alliance leaders visiting their villages about the status of their applications. He also demanded that the pending applications be verified and house sites and pattas allotted before the municipal elections.Municipal Commissioner Alim Bhasha received the memorandum from the protesters. He said applications received from people seeking house sites were being verified and that the authorities were also examining the availability and acquisition of land.He said steps were being taken to provide house sites to eligible beneficiaries and that the matter would be discussed with officials, with further action initiated within a month.CPI(M) Guntur district secretary Y. Netaji and others were present. Published - October 06, 2026 05:46 pm IST
