Coronation Street’s Carla takes control of Betsy’s suddenly promising future

Carla Connor-Swain doesn’t want to see Betsy Swain missing out (Picture: ITV) Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) has had to put her life on hold in recent Coronation Street scenes, after suffering a stroke that has left her with difficulties moving and communicating. Prior to collapsing in the kitchen unexpectedly, Betsy had been preparing to move to London after gaining a place on a fashion course. It was Betsy’s interest in fashion that initially helped grow the bond between Carla and Lisa Connor-Swain (Alison King and Vicky Myers). Their first heart-to-heart involved Lisa confiding in Carla about how Betsy was struggling in the wake of her mother’s death. On hearing that Betsy was interested in fashion, Carla organised for her to get some hands-on experience in the factory, which ultimately led to a permanent position. After finishing sixth form, Betsy applied for a place at the London College of Fashion, and was thrilled to have been accepted. When Betsy revealed the news to her parents, Carla was over the moon, and though Lisa took a bit of persuading, she was also on board with Betsy’s big plans. Fortunately, Carla isn’t willing to let Betsy abandon her fashion dreams in upcoming scenes, as she takes steps to ensure that Betsy won’t miss out on the fashion education she was so looking forward to. It all starts when Sally Webster (Sally Dynevor) pulls Carla aside and shows her the website for a fashion course at a local college, pointing out that it might suit Betsy. Of course, Carla takes no persuading, and Lisa is thrilled to see Betsy so energised, especially after how down she’s been recently. To further buoy Betsy’s spirits, Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) pops round later in the week to give her a manicure. Betsy is thrilled, but things take a terrifying turn when she suddenly clutches her head in pain, fearing she’s having another stroke.
