Textron Aviation and Merlin have revealed the Cessna SkyCourier UX, a concept that combines the FAA-certified turboprop with autonomous flight software. The companies unveiled the aircraft at the Air, Space, and Cyber Conference. The concept targets a growing challenge for U.S. military planners. Conflicts could disrupt conventional supply routes or make them too dangerous to use. Small unmanned aircraft may also lack the payload needed to keep dispersed forces supplied. The SkyCourier UX aims to fill that gap between smaller cargo drones and large military transports. It could give forces another option for moving supplies across contested areas. Bigger unmanned cargo option The SkyCourier UX would carry approximately 6,000 pounds of cargo under the current design. It could also accommodate up to three LD3 cargo containers. The aircraft’s ability to operate from unimproved runways could expand its usefulness at austere locations. That capability would matter for units operating away from major military airfields. Small cargo drones can reach difficult locations, but their payload capacity limits what they can deliver. A larger autonomous aircraft could move heavier loads without putting a crew aboard every mission. Potential missions include transporting repair parts, medical supplies and other critical cargo. The aircraft could also support expeditionary bases, remote airfields and island operations. Merlin supplies the autonomous flight technology. The company says Merlin Pilot has completed hundreds of autonomous flights aboard aircraft including Cessna Caravans and Beechcraft King Airs. The SkyCourier would give the system a larger platform for autonomous logistics missions. Autonomy changes design The project also examines how removing the crew could change the aircraft itself. Engineers are studying a layout that places additional cargo space where the conventional cockpit would normally sit. One concept uses a large opening at the nose for direct cargo access. A kneeling system and integrated loading equipment are also under consideration. Those changes could make loading easier at locations with limited ground support. They could also increase the amount of usable cargo space inside the aircraft. Merlin CEO Matt George said the concept combines established aircraft technology with autonomous flight. “Solving contested logistics today takes proven autonomy and a proven airframe,” George said. The SkyCourier already holds FAA certification and has an established manufacturing and support network. That gives the project an existing aircraft platform instead of requiring a clean-sheet design. Testing contested logistics The main question is whether an autonomous aircraft of this size can reliably handle military resupply missions. Textron and Merlin are still evaluating the concept. The companies plan engineering studies focused on autonomous and pilot-optional operations. The aircraft could eventually move supplies between larger hubs and isolated operating locations. Its proposed payload also gives it considerably more capacity than many smaller unmanned cargo systems. That could make the SkyCourier UX useful when traditional logistics aircraft face greater risks. A crewed transport may not always be the best choice for a short resupply mission near a contested area. The concept does not represent an operational military aircraft yet. Instead, it tests how an existing cargo platform could change when autonomy becomes central to its design.
