The movies were enormous financial successes, got the expected movie tie-in games, the LEGO treatment, and even influenced other pirate-themed adventures for a few years after the original trilogy concluded. With Black Flag and its enduring legacy further helping to popularize pirates and their swashbuckling ways, it seems like a no-brainer that Pirates of the Caribbean would be turned into a AAA title. Alas, that was never the case, and the steady decline in quality, critical, and commercial reception of the later Pirates movies all but ensured that the franchise would fade away. However, now that Pirates of the Caribbean is back (at least to an extent) and Black Flag Resynced has once again made pirates cool, there is absolutely room for a new pirate-themed RPG to rise through the ranks and rule the high seas (of Steam). Fortunately, one such title exists, a game that blends together Pirates of the Caribbean and Civilization to create something entirely new and extremely exciting. If You're Looking For A Pirate Sim, This Could Be It There are a plethora of routes a pirate-themed game, especially one inspired by the legendary Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, could take. However, the vast majority of them have already been covered, with the likes of Assassin's Creed: Black Flag and even, to a lesser extent, Skull and Bones, offering the definitive ship-sailing, swashbuckling, action-packed romps that one would expect from a game centered around the romanticized versions of the seas' greatest scoundrels. Fortunately, the aforementioned new pirate-themed sim has a few tricks up its sleeve to differentiate itself from the competition and offer a fresh take on the genre. While it is still packed with an abundance of adventure and skullduggery, it also breaks down the minutiae of being a pirate, the management of their resources, the construction of their weapons, and the building of their homes. This pirate RPG, titled Corsair Cove, lets players really control not just one pirate, but a whole horde of them, in a city-building RPG that's like no other. Corsair Cove comes from developer Limbic Entertainment, who developed the city-building sim, Tropico 6, as well as several Might & Magic Heroes games. In Corsair Cove, you attempt to construct an entire civilization for your pirate band, with every nook, cranny, and crevice available to be built upon. As you're relegated to the jagged isles hidden from the crown's view, you'll need to be clever about building placement, including utilizing all sides of the tall, narrow cliff faces. Once you've gathered resources, crafted everything from canons to cutlasses, you'll head out on your ships, complete quests, engage in unique events, and take the high seas at your own pace. It isn't hard to see the similarities between both Pirates of the Caribbean and Civilization, with the whole pirate theme and sea-scouring adventures playing into the appeal of the former while the focus on exploring uncharted lands, encountering random events, and building up a civilization very much feeling like the latter. While it isn't quite the official Pirates of the Caribbean spin-off one may have been hoping for, Corsair Cove is set to be a rather excellent pirate sim, and the best part is that players can try it for free. One can download the game's demo via its Steam store page to gain access to a wealth of content from the early portion of the experience, including unlocking various ships, the city building mechanics, and several quests and storylines. It's a fairly sizable demo, one that will give anyone considering picking it up an opportunity to see if it is really for them. For those who are inspired to continue playing more beyond what the demo offers, Corsair Cove is set to launch on July 31, 2026. The full game obviously includes multiple islands to explore, a huge number of quests, different ship classes, and so much more. Between this and Black Flag Resynced, Pirates of the Caribbean fans have more than enough to sink their teeth into and plenty of opportunity to live out their ultimate Captain Jack Sparrow adventures.
