Citizens invited to nominate national honours recipients

(Photo Credit: Shamar Blunt) A new national honour is being minted to mark the country’s 60th anniversary of Independence and five years as a Republic, honouring Barbadians who have made exceptional contributions to nation-building, the Cabinet Office announced on Friday. Dubbed the Barbados Diamond Anniversary Honour, it will recognise citizens whose distinguished or sustained service, leadership or exceptional achievements have made a significant contribution to national development. Cabinet Secretary Selma Green made the announcement during the media launch of the National Calendar of Independence Celebrations at Ilaro Court, where she also revealed that nominations are open for the 2026 National Independence Honours. The special Diamond Anniversary Honour would recognise contributions across areas including public service, education, health, business, culture, sport, community development, science and technology, national security, charitable service and the Barbadian diaspora, she said. Eligible nominees must be Barbadian citizens who have demonstrated distinguished or sustained service, integrity, leadership, exemplary conduct or exceptional achievement. But, Green noted that people who already hold a national honour or decoration are not eligible for the Barbados Diamond Anniversary Honour. You Might Be Interested In She encouraged Barbadians to look beyond the country’s most familiar names when considering nominees. She said: “As we commemorate 60 years of Independence and five years as a Republic, we’re reminded that the story of Barbados is ultimately the story of its people – those who have served, sacrificed, led, created, cared and worked often quietly and without expectation of recognition to build this beautiful nation.” She described national honours and decorations as “one of the most meaningful ways in which we as a grateful nation can say thank you”. The National Independence Honours would recognise outstanding achievement and meritorious service across all areas of national life, Green said. “I particularly encourage Barbadians to look beyond the familiar names,” she said, urging people to consider those making a difference in their communities, professions, churches, schools, sporting organisations and voluntary groups. She pointed to teachers who have shaped generations, community workers who have served quietly for decades, artistes who have preserved the country’s culture, entrepreneurs who have created opportunities, and public and protective services officers who have exemplified duty. Green also encouraged nominations of Barbadians whose contributions have brought distinction to the country. Nominations for both the National Independence Honours and the Barbados Diamond Anniversary Honour close next Friday. Applications can be submitted electronically through the government’s online nomination form, which will be promoted through the Barbados Government Information Service and other government digital platforms.
