Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Adds Even More Screenings After All-Time Box Office Record

The Odyssey's theatrical journey has added a leg. 2026's The Odyssey, which was written and directed by Christopher Nolan, is an adaptation of Homer's epic poem that features Matt Damon as Odysseus opposite a star-studded cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, and many more. The movie, which is the first to be shot in its entirety on IMAX film cameras, has broken box office records, including becoming Christopher Nolan's highest-grossing movie and the highest-grossing IMAX release of all time. It's also the first IMAX release to earn more than $50 million on two consecutive weekends, eventually extending that record to four consecutive weekends. At the time of writing, The Odyssey has earned $1.557 billion worldwide, making it the 14th highest-grossing movie of all time. IMAX has officially announced that the IMAX 70mm run of The Odyssey has been extended yet again and is currently set to run through the end of September 2026. Presuming that this specialty run does not get extended again down the road, this will push the movie's IMAX tenure to 11 full weeks. These additional showtimes have already been listed at 39 IMAX locations around the globe in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Belgium, France, and the Czech Republic. Already, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has grossed a cumulative $457 million worldwide in IMAX screenings alone, which is a total that comprises 29% of its entire gross. $66 million of that total has come from IMAX 70mm screenings, comprising 14% of its IMAX gross and 4% of its overall gross. That is more than the overall worldwide box office grosses of a number of major 2026 movies, including the post-apocalyptic horror sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple ($58.5 million), the Chris Pratt sci-fi movie Mercy ($54.7 million), the Jason Statham action movie Shelter ($54.6 million), the Gerard Butler sequel Greenland 2: Migration ($45.2 million), the Kevin James dramedy Solo Mio ($26.4 million), and Maggie Gyllenhaal's Universal Monsters reimagining The Bride! ($23.9 million). This extended run for The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm continues a series of major wins for the movie in that format that extend back more than a year. In fact, the movie sold out several IMAX theaters in July 2025, a full year before it debuted in theaters. This high level of anticipation, in addition to the fact that the movie presents a historic first thanks to its top-to-bottom use of IMAX film cameras, has created major ongoing demand for tickets to those premium screenings. This extended run will also offer The Odyssey a chance to climb even higher at the box office. While it may not seem like it, there are still frontiers left for it to conquer. Even though it is already Christopher Nolan's highest-grossing movie both domestically and worldwide, that is only true when the chart is not adjusted for inflation. When adjusted for inflation, it still needs to outgross 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, which has an adjusted worldwide gross of $1.58 billion.
