Children’s Hospital in Zaporizhzhia Hit by Russian Strike; Children and Medics Saved by Shelter

Russian forces struck the grounds of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital on Tuesday, damaging the medical facility but leaving children and staff unharmed because they had taken shelter during the air raid. The attack damaged the hospital’s facade and shattered windows, according to Zaporizhzhia regional governor Ivan Fedorov.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official. “The enemy attacked the territory of the regional children’s clinical hospital. Fortunately, during the air raid, all the children and medical staff were in the shelter. No one was injured,” Fedorov said. A narrow escape The absence of casualties came down to a routine that Ukrainian hospitals have been forced to adopt after more than four years of Russia’s full-scale war: moving vulnerable patients and medical personnel into shelters whenever air raid sirens sound. This time, that precaution prevented another potentially devastating loss of life at a medical facility serving children. The strike comes just two days after Russian guided bombs hit Zaporizhzhia, killing two people and injuring 21 as residential and other buildings were damaged across the city. Medical facilities remain under threat The latest attack adds to a long record of Russian strikes damaging Ukrainian healthcare infrastructure. Zaporizhzhia itself has seen previous medical facilities hit. In November 2024, a Russian attack damaged the regional oncology center, forcing patients to be evacuated to other hospitals; medical workers were among dozens injured in the wider strike.
