Electrofuels made from captured carbon dioxide and renewable electricity have powered a scheduled U.S. commercial passenger flight after moving through a conventional airport fuel network for the first time. The demonstration marks a key milestone for power-to-liquids technology, showing that synthetic aviation fuel can integrate with today’s fueling infrastructure without requiring changes to aircraft or airport operations. American Airlines operated the flight from Corpus Christi International Airport to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport using electro-sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) produced by clean fuels developer Infinium. The fuel reached the aircraft through the airport’s existing fuel system, providing a real-world demonstration of next-generation aviation fuel technology. Power-to-liquids takes flight Unlike conventional sustainable aviation fuels that rely on biological feedstocks, Infinium’s eSAF uses waste carbon dioxide and renewable electricity. The process combines captured carbon with hydrogen produced using renewable power to create synthetic hydrocarbons that closely resemble conventional jet fuel. The fuel came from Infinium’s Pathfinder facility in Corpus Christi, the world’s first commercial-scale power-to-liquids eFuels plant. Operating since 2023, the site initially produced eDiesel and eNaphtha before expanding into sustainable aviation fuel. According to the company, its production process can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90% compared with conventional petroleum-based jet fuel. Infinium CEO Robert Schuetzle said the company has already proven commercial production of low-carbon fuels for trucking and industrial uses. He said adding eSAF to the product lineup and powering a passenger flight represents another step toward wider commercial adoption. Fits today’s infrastructure The engineering milestone extends beyond the fuel itself. Engineers blended the synthetic fuel with conventional Jet A before confirming it met ASTM International fuel specifications for commercial aviation. The certified blend entered Corpus Christi International Airport’s shared fuel storage system before American Airlines allocated it to a scheduled passenger flight. Airport infrastructure, fueling equipment and aircraft engines required no modifications, demonstrating that eSAF can function as a drop-in replacement within existing aviation fuel networks. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said the flight shows how emerging fuel technologies can move from demonstration projects into commercial operations. He added that expanding production at lower costs will remain critical for reducing aviation emissions. Scaling synthetic fuel Commercial aviation consumes nearly 100 billion gallons of jet fuel every year, yet sustainable aviation fuel still accounts for less than 1% of global supply. Electrofuels have gained attention because they avoid biological feedstocks while fitting into existing distribution systems. Infinium plans to expand production through its Project Roadrunner facility, which is under construction and expected to begin producing eSAF in 2027. Once fully operational, the plant is projected to produce more than 5 million gallons annually. The successful deployment suggests one of the biggest technical hurdles has already been cleared. Power-to-liquids fuel can move through today’s aviation supply chain and power existing aircraft.
