Capt. Chowta seeks action against hospitals refusing to admit and treat accident victims under PM-RAHAT scheme

Brijesh Chowta, MP for Dakshina Kannada, has instructed officials to take strict action against hospitals that refuse to admit and treat persons injured in road accidents under the Prime Minister-Road Accident Victims’ Hospitalisation and Assured Treatment (PM-RAHAT) scheme.At a meeting with Police and Health department officials, and representatives of hospitals here on Saturday, Capt. Chowta said free emergency treatment of up to ₹1.50 lakh for seven days without any documentation has been provided to persons under the scheme. The Prime Minister has rolled out this scheme to ensure that there is no fear or hesitation among the public in admitting accident victims to hospital. Although the Central government launched the scheme in 2025, the State government started it in February 2026. “Therefore, it should be implemented very strictly and effectively,” he said.The MP said e-Detailed Accident Report (e-DAR) entry has been made mandatory for hospitals to avail the scheme benefits without delay. Hospitals should enter the information on the e-DAR portal within 24 hours of admission to hospital, or within 48 hours in critical cases. Once the information provided by the hospital is verified and approved by the Police Department, it will be sent to the Transaction Management System portal and the government will bear the treatment costs. Failure to enter the information within the stipulated period could deprive eligible victims of free treatment, he said, directing all private and government hospitals in the district to follow this mandatory procedure.Capt. Chowta instructed the District Health and Family Welfare Officer (DHO) to hold meetings with major hospitals in each taluk to ensure strict implementation of the scheme. He directed that data on injured persons treated under the scheme should be maintained systematically and that a monthly meeting should be held to review its progress. He said public awareness should be created about the scheme at the hospital level, and the health and police departments, along with hospitals, should work in close coordination to ensure that the benefits are properly extended to the injured.Speaking at the meeting, Mangaluru City South MLA D. Vedavyas Kamath said people should also come forward to help accident victims by admitting them to hospital without fear.
