A BRUTAL storm has struck the Costa del Sol with torrential rain and hailstones sparking a flood alert in the Brit holiday hotspot. Large swathes of the Andalusia region are expected to see drastic changes in weather with storms, flooding, and large hailstones, local authorities say. Spanish weather agency Aemet has predicted a so-called Dana system to sweep through the region. It is essentially a cold drop isolated depression – meaning huge amounts of rain can fall in just hours. The yellow warnings for thunderstorms will be in place from 2pm to 10pm today. On Friday, Almería, Granada and Jaén issued storm warnings. But the region will see stark contrasts between showers and sun as record-breaking levels of heat also continue to persist. Cádiz, Granada, Huelva and Seville are also set to remain on yellow alert. Over the weekend, showers and thunderstorms are expected to batter the Costa del Sol as well as the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca. Hailstones are expected to develop during the weather phenomenon. From Monday onwards, the risk of widespread storms is set to decrease. Over the weekend, today is estimated to be the most challenging day of the shocking turn of weather. The heaviest showers will hit the north of Catalonia and Aragón, according to local media.
