Brazil tackles clean energy bottleneck

03:00 Brazil has rapidly expanded wind and solar power generation, particularly in its northeastern region, but the country’s electricity grid has struggled to keep pace. Last year, roughly one-fifth of the renewable energy that could have been generated was curtailed because transmission capacity and demand were insufficient. Experts say expanding long-distance transmission lines and investing in battery storage are key to reducing energy waste. China’s State Grid Corporation of China is playing a major role by accelerating construction of ultra-high-voltage transmission lines that will carry renewable energy from northeastern Brazil to the country’s industrial southeast.
