Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond. Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series has become increasingly popular in recent months after the massive success of the official Cosmere role-playing game, published by Brotherwise Games in partnership with Dragonsteel Entertainment. The tabletop RPG adapts stories from both Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive, and features the standalone Stonewalkers campaign, with a sequel already in play-testing alongside additional long-term support planned for the Cosmere RPG. However, based on a teaser announcement from Sanderson's 2025 year-in-review update, it seems that Mistborn may be getting an official AAA RPG adaptation as well, bringing the Cosmere universe to video game format for the first time in its storied history. While no official plans have been confirmed and the idea remains in early development at this stage, with Sanderson still pitching the concept to multiple studios, a proper Mistborn RPG has left gamers largely divided (via Reddit). Seeing as this isn't the first time Sanderson has floated making a video game based on his work, fans aren't getting their hopes up for anything until definitive plans are confirmed. Famously, back in 2012, an action RPG titled Mistborn: Birthright was that would have featured an original story set centuries before The Final Empire, following a nobleman named Fendin “Fiddle” Fathvell as he learned to use Allomancy. After repeated delays, developer Little Orbit officially cancelled the game in 2017. As such, it's understandable why gamers are skeptical about a potential Mistborn RPG. "This is so far in pre development there is no reason to get hopes up that anything will come from this in the near to medium range future," says LackOfAnotherName. That said, players agree that Mistborn and the Allomancy magic system is ripe for video game implementation, with VeiledMalice arguing that, "From the very start, allomancy read like the most video game power system I'd ever heard from a novel. It really seems perfect for something like a Dishonored/Deus Ex game." Original artwork by Howard Lyon "The book read like a video game tutorial (at least some of it at the start). I was already imagining it in like a spider man like video game (in terms of traversal) when I was reading it," says Cedar_Wood_State, referring to the Mistborns' abilities to push and pull on nearby metal objects, allowing them to propel themselves across rooftops and swing through cities, etc. Other fans worry that, given Sanderson's love for Soulsborne games and FromSoftware projects such as Bloodborne and Elden Ring, a Mistborn soulslike could be very likely if the project is picked up at all. "I would strongly prefer Obsidian over From because they are much better at developing characters and weaving a narrative into the game which Mistborn needs," says Zikronious, though they admit "there are some creatures (koloss, inquisitors, mistwraiths) from Mistborn I would love to see From’s take on though." Ultimately, there still haven't been any major updates on the AAA Mistborn adaptation since Sanderson's 2025 update, and given he is quite vocal and candid about his various project updates, we'd likely have heard something at this point. So, for now, it seems that the Mistborn RPG will remain subject to debate among fans of Sanderson's work, at least until something more concrete is announced.
