BJP MP seeks probe after man alleges police torture over protest against Punjab CM

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Chugh has written to the National Human Rights Commission seeking its intervention over allegations that a young man was tortured in police custody after protesting against Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.The case concerns Mohanjeet Singh, who reportedly waved a black flag during the Chief Minister’s public interaction in Sheron village in the Sunam Assembly constituency on September 2.According to Chugh, Mohanjeet was detained immediately after the protest. Mohanjeet later alleged that he was stripped, assaulted and subjected to electric shocks in custody.He also accused police personnel of pulling hair from his beard, cutting his thighs with blades and rubbing salt into his wounds. Mohanjeet further claimed that he was shown to CM Mann over a video call while being tortured. He also alleged that police personnel harassed his mother and sister.The allegations have not been independently verified. Seeking an NHRC investigation, Chugh described the alleged custodial torture as a grave abuse of power and an attack on democratic rights.“When a Chief Minister fears a citizen’s voice, democracy is in danger. Questioning those in power can never justify intimidation or alleged brutality,” he said.Chugh asked the CM as well as AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal why a citizen should face such treatment for protesting against the government.“This is not governance.
