Big Brother fans furious after housemate has to remove prosthetic legs to enter House

With AJ Odudu and Will Best back as hosts, the social experiment returned for its fourth civilian series on ITV. A total of 16 housemates entered the revamped House, hoping to emerge victorious in seven weeks and £100,000 richer. Among the new batch of contestants is 18-year-old Charlotte, a student from Oxford, who explained in her introductory VT that she lost her hands and feet to meningitis at age three. ‘People stare at me. People even take pictures of me. And I forget, because I’ll be out and I’ll be like, “Oh my God, I must be looking quite nice today!” and then I remember it’s actually because I’ve got no limbs,’ she told cameras. Charlotte was due to enter the House like all other housemates, being escorted from a car to the stage. However, mere seconds after unveiling herself to the studio audience, her shoe came off. Cameras cut away to the housemates already inside as Will tried to assist Charlotte, but she could be heard instructing him on how to remove her prosthetic legs. The teen ultimately had to go into the House without them, taking it all in good spirits as she declared: ‘My legs! My shoe came off. I’m so sorry, I had to take my legs off.’ ‘Nothing to apologise for,’ AJ reassured her as the crowd cheered. The presenting duo carried on with their jobs, asking self-professed ‘straight talker’ Charlotte how she was going to get on with her housemates. ‘I’m scared for everyone. I’m scared for everyone watching me as well,’ she quipped, confirming this was her first time living away from home and she was ‘so excited’. But while Charlotte kept a smile on her face, viewers took to social media to criticise the bosses’ lack of preparation, arguing that a more accessible entrance should’ve been arranged. ‘So big brother booked someone with no limbs and still didn’t think it was wise to get a ramp or a stair lift,’ wrote @AaronJEng1 on X. ‘Really quite bad that ITV haven’t made the ramp/steps accessible for Charlotte!’, echoed @WarrenPeace_75, with @clotimms admitting it was ‘horrible to watch as a fellow disabled person’. ‘No are you actually joking?! THEY DIDNT PLAN AN ACCESSIBLE ENTRANCE FOR CHARLOTTE????’, raged @savlenetudaleft, adding that they were ‘so disappointed’. ‘Umm they really should have thought about an accessibility entrance for Charlotte. She seems like she’s going to be a laugh though’, @CosmicMalex_ said. 16 new housemates have entered the social experiment (Picture: ITV) @leeurhm wrote that ‘Big Brother being quick to cast disabled people but failing to make the house entrance accessible is just an absolute mockery’. Others suggested that perhaps ITV ‘would have asked Charlotte what she needed’, with @RobInnes87 wondering: ‘Maybe she said she’d be okay with what there was but then wasn’t expecting to have the shoe issue?’ Nevertheless, Charlotte was praised for ‘cracking on despite what happened’, and many predicted she could ruffle feathers this series. She shared in her VT: ‘I hate woke people. I don’t hate woke people; I love everybody, but the world is not made for people like me, and it’s just too bad. That’s what I think!’ ‘If somebody insults my character,’ she went on, ‘I can go absolutely feral.’ ITV has not yet responded to the backlash that stemmed from Charlotte’s entrance, but a statement on its website insists that the broadcaster is ‘committed to being accessible to all, both off and on-screen’. Since the reality show was revived on ITV in 2023, several disabled contestants have taken part. The first series saw Kerry Riches, who lives with multiple sclerosis, compete, with the House adapted for her mobility scooter, and in 2024, Big Brother featured Thomas Atkinson, a 20-year-old amputee footballer. ITV has been contacted for comment.
