Find Chris on Twitter @_SRChris. Steam really is the final frontier of sci-fi gaming. There are so many games on the platform, many of which allow players to explore the infinite reaches of space. Sometimes those discoveries are terrifying, and other times, it's a relaxing place to spend your days. It really depends on the experience, since something like FTL isfundamentally different from, say, Dead Space. On Steam, you can find a game that mixes Battlestar Galactica with Star Trek, with a little sprinkle of The Expanse for good measure. In other words, it's trying to do a lot of things, but so far it looks like it's pulling it off. Developed by Stutter Fox Studios, Falling Frontier fits into a long line of ambitious sci-fi games, but this time you're looking to battle hostile forces more than explore the vast reaches of space. There will be plenty of exploring, to be clear, as you'll hop through procedurally generated star systems filled with planets, asteroid fields, and other space detritus, but you can also build refineries, depots, and shipyards to build up your forces. Here's what Stutter Fox Studios says to expect: "Conquer a vast procedurally generated star system in Falling Frontier, a sci-fi RTS where intel and logistics are decisive factors. Design ships and raid enemy supply lines, lay minefields and construct recon stations, and ambush enemy forces within asteroid fields and nebulae. Falling Frontier is a revolutionary sci-fi RTS where ship design, recon, and logistics are critical elements. Your expeditionary force has just completed construction of its first space port in orbit of a new world, but you are not alone. Rivals from the old colonial wars between Earth, Titan, Venus, and the other lineages that divide humankind have also arrived in the same star system." You can research and upgrade new technologies, as most RTS games do, but this time you'll engage in nuanced space combat, with ricochets and unintentional fire coming into play, damaging ship subsystems. Smaller ships might be less powerful, but they can sneak around better on the battlefield for a different strategic tactic. To that end, smaller vessels can be used in guerrilla warfare against larger outfits, as you attempt to raid enemy depots and protect your own. Probes can also be sent out to explore the universe, so there isn't constant combat. To keep the game personality-driven, crews are made up of individuals with identities and traits that can, in turn, affect battle by bringing the right crew for the job. Enemy crew members can be captured, or "left in their escape pods as bait" if you choose, illuminating some of the darker elements of the game's combat system. Predictably, Falling Frontier has no release date and only lists "coming soon" on Steam. We don't have a major Steam update to base a timeline on, but Stutter Fox Studios has been posting updates as recently as May of this year on X. It's possible that Falling Frontier is years away from being completed, so look for some other sci-fi games to play in the meantime, likely on Steam, where the vast majority of them are going these days.
