LEWIS HAMILTON left fans in stitches as he pulled up in the P1 position – despite qualifying in SECOND. Lando Norris snatched pole from the Brit, who continues the hunt for his first pole in two-years, which he bagged at this very track in 2023. Hamilton had blitzed to provisional pole in Q3 as he hit the top of the timesheet, 0.104seconds faster than Norris. The seven-time world champion did not improve on his final attempt as he faced an anxious wait to see if anyone would beat him. Drama erupted when Max Verstappen spun on track but kept the car out of the barriers at the last corner as the yellow flag came out. George Russell, who will start the race in seventh, then pulled over at the first corner after he crossed the line, and got out of his car which had a water leak. While the Ferraris could not improve, Norris found time further back on the lap and pipped Hamilton to the head of the grid by 0.017s. Leclerc went third in the second Ferrari, two tenths away from Hamilton while Antonelli took fourth ahead of fifth-place Oscar Piastri. Hamilton was left unhappy with his team’s decision to go out first in the session and said: “We have been doing a great job all weekend. I felt solid throughout qualifying and, for some reason, we went out first, which I don’t think was the right call. “But then, on top of that, just the grip for some reason wasn’t there on that last lap for both Charles and I. “It’s obviously a track that I love. We’re obviously competitive but I think tomorrow is going to be a hard day.” Antonelli is leading the driver’s standings by 45 points ahead of second-place Hamilton, while Russell is 50 adrift.
